Go figure why it was abolished!
My history teacher (chief history examiner) last year said when he was a young lad, he had to watch fellow students get lashings by sadistic teachers for petty little things . Blood was often drawn, but what could the students do? Very little . He always wanted to teach but vowed to never hit a child . If a teacher has any kind of skill or decency, they will use other means to AVOID disruption and control his/her students . Respect is a two way road . Believe me, out of all my teachers, the ones we've loved the most were the ones who respected our views and opinions when justified and went out of their way to make the experience the most enjoyable and productive . In turn we'd interact and look forward to having that class, and put effort into learning!

"Those Who Forget History Are Doomed to Repeat It"
And that popular quote was on the front wall of my history class .

Bollocks . . . You are right though about teachers . There are teachers and "teachers" Mind you, I am going back 50/60 years ago and I remember some that we worshipped and did our work with enthusiasm - with no corporal punishment .

Then there were the rotten sods who did as your history teacher stated . they were hated but still we had to do the work . The results were different .

As for the cane, part of life mate . I think we were better behaved than a lot of the little S . O . B****** that are around these days . Since corporal punishment was abolished, things have gone from bad to worse . Just read the papers .

Ken

PS I got the cane a few times and my father gave me a whack about the ears a few times, a policeman clipped me over the head once or twice!!! Did I ever beat up my wife and kids . . . . NEVER

Oh I believe that, however I don't think this is because the cane was abandoned. I read newspaper stories with quiet skepticism. It's a fact that the media feasts on the problems caused by a minority of young people; the majority buy it.

He said teachers can't legally tell students what to when off the school property. This coming from his cousin, a teacher.

Referring to my previous posts, that advice is incorrect in principle, but in practice school staff would rarely tell a student "what to do" anyway unless the behaviour was a gross breach such as fighting, sadistic bullying, or other activities that any right-minded person woud object to, let alone a staff member . Instead they would bring the behaviour to the attention of the Principal who would initiate an investigation and take appropriate action if adequte grounds and evidence exist .

A classic example that no doubt will raise a storm of protest from younger members of the Forum is the carrying of fellow students as passengers in their cars . To do that the student must first have permission from the Principal to drive a vehicle to and from school, then have the permission of the parents of their passengers, the permission of the school (readily granted if the first two conditions are met) and a license that allows them to carry passengers .

It never ceases to amaze me how otherwise intelligent young people can suspend their critical faculties so easily, then go ahead in broad daylight and carry out some unbelievably stupid act, then wonder why or how they got caught . Selling marijuana at or outside the school is a classic example . Within five minutes the senior management team will have been told by several of the offenders peers exactly who sold what and to whom, how many and how much . You see, they don't want their school to be a drug market .

And you'd be amazed how much MJ some students seem to find lying on the footpaths on their way to school!

Cheers

578206 2007-08-09 14:52:00 Perhaps we expect too much of teachers, and don't give them statutory authority to maintain discipline properly. I had the good fortune to attend a Church of Scotland private school in the fifties, and discipline was expected to be enforced as a matter of course by both the pupils and their parents. The school was strict but very fair, they maintained high academic standards, an excellent sporting record, demanded full participation by all boys and under no circumstances countenanced bullying. The discipline served us well, most of our generation developed good self discipline, and with it a healthy respect for the law and the establishment.
Unhappily this is not the case today, discipline in many schools is a joke, bullying is endemic and academic standards are substandard in many cases.
Bullying should be stamped out in schools both from staff members and especially from pupils, it can make children hate attending school, with the long term potential consequence of damaging their prospects for life.
The tragedy is that this slack attitude to discipline along with poor academic performance hurts pupils from the lower economic socio groups rather than children who come from relatively well advantaged families, because education is the prime catalyst for upward social and economic mobility.
