577899 2007-08-09 19:28:00 Jeez, I hope I'm not included in that- I have an IQ in double figures you know :stare:I doubt it. To me, Windows users would be more like sheep (Im not trying to create a flame war here, this is just an opinion/observation). Sheep find it easier to follow whoever is leading, and won't break away from the norm. When you consider OS's, Windows is the norm. Myth (110)

Double digit IQs aside you have to ask why its the norm.

577901 2007-08-09 22:00:00 As most open source developers don't get anything for their work, why should they spend twice the amount of time making the user interface so friendly that a rat can use it (it would be great but most don't have the time).

That's a fair point.

I would make the comment, however, that there is a large sector of the open source community that believes that open source operating systems and applications could and should reach critical mass one day and become "mainstream". Before this happens I believe they will have to show far more understanding of the majority of computer users.

577903 2007-08-10 10:38:00 Just for your information, unfriendly interfaces have long plagued the software industry. :2cents:
This is the link (www.iarchitect.com) to the old "Interface Hall of Shame". The current site is not working properly in Grand Paradiso or Konqueror but MS software did feature a lot on the old site.
The type of thing I think is stupid is within Word 'Shrink to fit' is found as a button on the 'Print preview' whereas it is a formatting option and so should be under the format menu. It was always as useful as a one legged horse compared to Wordperfect's 'Make it Fit' where you have several options to make it fit the desired number of pages. Font, line spacing, margins are just a few I can remember.

577904 2007-08-10 10:48:00 I start up a Mac and it does what I want; I boot up Windows and do what I'm told.
Now there's Linux. It doesn't tell me what to do, and I don't know how to tell it what to do. So we just stare at each other and shrug.

Have fun with whatever you use :)

Have fun with whatever you use :)You must be fantastic with Linux. I've been using it for 2 years and I still can't get it to shrug :p

I dunno- that red blinking 'bash' cursor thing that taunts you when you type in <startx> seems very like a "Nah, I'm not doing what you want" sort of shrug :(

And yes- 2 days with shiny new PClos and I've managed to stuff it by following instructions :D
