577552 2007-08-07 20:13:00 This decision sucks in that the dog, daughter, gf and I make a great family unit, but because others cannot control their kids, one of my family must go . BS if ya ask me

I am both amazed at and happy for your total decision to be RESPONSIBLE for your dog .

Yeah . . it's a crapper to have to put an animal down for the consideration of idiot people . . . but you have given me insight to you . . . and I find you to be a refreshing breeze in a smoggy area of defense of animals that MIGHT be dangerous and therefor require drastic actions .

Sorry for your ultimate/future loss . I too have had an animal or two that weren't "people" types . . unless it meant chewing on people .

I too had to put them down for the sake of my own legality and peace of mind .

Unfortunately too, I have had a dog poisoned and another shot by thieves who wanted into my home when I wasn't home .

The animal in one case got a few good bites in as he was dying, but the house didn't get broken into that time .

The other time I lost a stereo and a tv . . . but the biggest loss was to the female boxer I'd had for years . Miss her a lot yet .

So . . dogs are not the best form of security . . . but they are good at keeping the non-pro out at least .

Right now I have a part chow/golden retriever who is a complete dummy . . . US-talk type dummy . . means stooooopid beyond all possibilities .

I like her . . she is just a ferocious barker, not a biter . We have had her a while, and she doesn't seem to be getting any smarter . . so we keep her inside our fenced property . . "just in case" she gets a taste of children or other pets .

She'll charge right up to the fence, teeth bare and snarling . . . but if you actually came OVER the fence after her . . she'd run away and cower under the porch .

Again, sorry for you loss . Happy for your insight and responsibility though .

577553 2007-08-07 20:19:00 The dogs not dead yet.... and I won't just roll over and sacrifice one of the family without a fight... without knowing I have done everything humanly (and humanely) possible

While the g/f is asking the vet today how much to euthanise the dog, I will get her to ask about animal psychology. I know the dog is trainable, I want a professional's opinion before I give up
Myth (110)
577554 2007-08-07 21:07:00 I just have to emphasise the dogs' innocence as they were artificially selected by humans.

Some breeds were "artificially selected" by some fairly sick humans. I can't see the likes of Pit Bulls (and similar) being a friendly family pet, its a breed I think the world could do without.

577555 2007-08-07 22:06:00 Animal psychologist? in Taranaki???

Not quite the 'naki, but some locals swear by this guy (http://www.paulhutton.co.nz/)

Which counts for exactly sweet F.A. when it comes to whether he/she is making a valid point.

Try asking Denise from www.gsdrescue.org.nz

She's a lovely lady who makes it her mission to save abandoned/neglected and in general rehoming German Shepherds around NZ. She's also a renowned dog behaviourist, so you may like asking her a question or two.

577559 2007-08-08 05:06:00 Well, imagine my horror then . . .
going by current comments on this forum:
my kid is a Maori so that means I am going to beat the **** out of her,
my dog is a pit-staffy, so that means Im a mongrel who should be euthanised,
my gf's second cousin is a high ranking gang member in Taranaki

</sarcasm>

For over 30 years now I have been depressed reading about idiots who own dangerous dogs . First in the UK then over here . Always its the same story - "The dog was so friendly and no problem"
Then suddenly it turns on somebody, generally a child or with luck its owner .
Frankly I'm really fed up with the same story from different people for all this time .
If the details you give are right and not just a made up story Myth, you are going to have a badly bitten child soon . THAT IS A FACT .
Fortunately I have been able to convince 2 local people this last year to get rid of their dogs - children were around . One was a little late and it managed to kill two cats before it met its fate .

Hmmm I have a mutt that has Pit Bull and Staffy in his blood .

He lives around children . Care to convince me that my dog is a blood thirsty killer?
