577235 2007-08-07 14:16:00 Well, I have gone back to making my own bread again as a tiny protest against the gumberment enforcing medication on the whole population by legislating for the compulsory addition of folic acid to bread - an unnecessary requirement for most of the population, and added in doses that will not be medically significant for the target population unless they eat 11 slices of bread per day...

what about the flouride in auckland's water supply? just a harmless public health measure that helps us help ourselves.

really, if you think about it, that bread law could help restrict the import of chinese breads into our country

577236 2007-08-07 14:22:00 MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF NUTS

last time i had peanut butter it was on toast, tasted "wrong" and stuck to the roof of my mouth. any and all attempts to clean from mouth were unsuccessful.
upon further inspection of the large jar/pot of sanatarium crunchy peanut butter, i found it had expired THREE YEARS prior to my consuming it.
:yuck::yuck::yuck::yuck::yuck:

safe to say i've never tried since, although i imagine i'll still like it.

moral of the story? who cares where it came from; check the use-by date!
(especially if it's a nearly finished jar at the back of the pantry)

edit: and no, it wasn't furry or nuthin!

577237 2007-08-07 17:48:00 One of my many mechanical jobs was with Laura Scudder's Foods Inc . , and I got to see food production from ground level .

They made Laura Scudder's Brand peanut butter, potato(e) chips, cheese snacks, corn chips, Thousand Island Spices, Seven Seas, Peter Pan, Skippy, Nabisco, Old Plantation, Ben-N-Jerry's, Planters, Mauna Loa, Gristmill Farms, Tudor Foods, some for Frito~Lay Corp . . . and many "generic foods" for the discounter markets .

The generics were all the same products, but were off-brand with different labeling so the public didn't see the company of origin and make price comparisons and therefor buy the cheaper product .

HINT: The containers/bags etc, were the same as was the product recall serial numbers, they just had different labels or imprinting . :p

Anyway . . . . I was gonna talk about peanuts .

"Goober Peas", as they were called in the US Civil War, are yet a major crop in the US . Peanuts are used for everything . . and I'm nor going into much detail about that right here .

Youse guys are fortunate, as it might make this a really long lecture if I were to talk about that!

BUT . . I got to be good friends with a food chemist (not like the NZ term "chemist" but a person who knows chemical reactions from foods and ingredients, purity standards and acceptable processing and packaging techniques and systems to assure product safety and quality) .

He showed me under a microscope the problem with most raw food . . but especially peanuts . He would never allow raw foods of any type in his home or on his own table for reasons he showed me .

They (peanuts) have a bacteria on the skin that is very dangerous if consumed in the even minute amounts . . it varies by person, but it can be fatal in a relatively small dose .

Salmonella Mbandaka and Salmonella Tennessee are two, but the most danerous is:

Aflatoxins . . . . . . . . . . . . which are (a) toxic substance made by molds . These aflatoxins are very toxic to the liver even in very small amounts . Unfortunately, Aflatoxins on peanuts are a very real problem . Aflatoxins are a health danger to people who eat nuts, especially peanuts .

Many people are also allergic to peanuts, even the oil or shell dust, so caution is advised in case of any family history of allergies .

Peanuts, like cashews, accumulate molds very easily, especially one called aflatoxin, a potent carcinogen . For this reason, all raw peanuts should be heated before eating to kill off any molds .

Cashews are one of the foods that need to be approached cautiously when facing candidiasis, or a systemic yeast infection .

Cashews accumulate mold more readily than other nuts and allergic reactions to them are fairly common in those with this ailment . You can spot moldy cashews by black flecks on the nut’s surface . All cashews are cooked as a process of shelling and removing the poisonous oils between the shell and the skin of the nut . There are no cashews in foodstuffs that are NOT cooked .

Symptoms of peanut allergy are related to the action of IgE and other anaphylatoxins, which act to release histamine and other mediator substances from mast cells (degranulation) . In addition to other effects, histamine induces vasodilation of arterioles and constriction of bronchioles in the lungs, also known as bronchospasm (constriction of the airways) .

So . . cooked and processed into peanut or cashew butter usually removes the dangers of those toxins . . except for the anaphylactic shock problem from allergies to either of those products . That cannot be removed by heating .

Interesting sidebar here:

The dangers of peanut allergy are real, even if sometimes misrepresented in the popular press .

(C/P) ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Peanut_allergy" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) The 2005 death of Christina Desforges, which was initially reported as a result of exposure to peanuts, spurred many parents to speak out about the dangers from such seemingly mundane matters as peanut butter and jam sandwiches at schools or peanut shells on the floors of restaurants .

According to a coroner's statement in March 2006 however, Ms . Desforges did not die of anaphylactic shock caused by a kiss from her boyfriend after he ate a peanut butter snack, but in fact died as a result of asthma-linked respiratory failure, which was triggered by tobacco and marijuana smoke at a party .

Research by Jennifer Maloney (I don't know who she is either!) suggests that peanut allergens normally leave the saliva after about an hour .

My favorite part of the plant was the peanut grinder that took tons of cooked peanuts and just ground them into paste between huge stainless steel balls that rotated on a heated table where the "butter" ran into preheated jars for packaging .

We were allowed to grab one or two of these jars from time to time right off the machine for our personal consumption .

With no oils, salt, sugar or preservatives added, these had to be the very best way to eat peanut butter .

You cannot get that gustatory feeling after the butter has cooled . . . it HAS to be that fresh to really get the best of it .

As far as "out-dated" or old product . . . if it is palatable (doesn't make you gag from mold, green fuzz growing, rancid oils, bulged containers or broken seals and crimping to the bags, etc), then you can usually eat it . The chances of contamination of a SEALED container/bag/jar/package are pretty slim and if you can actually keep it in your mouth, it very likely won't hurt you .

577240 2007-08-08 05:52:00 Rule 2: Never hunt alone. That means that you have to be quicker than your friend, not the prospective food. This works well in both situations. Graham L (2)
577241 2007-08-08 06:03:00 If you look closer you will see on the label Australian Health Association and NZ health Association and the addresses but right at the bottom of the label it says
Made In China .

They must have only fairly recently gone the Chinese way then as my jar has just expired and definitely has no mention of China anywhere .

Not that it matters, you are just as likely to get something bad from eating at NZ restaurants from poor food handling hygiene .

And don't I know that only too well . :(

577242 2007-08-08 06:44:00 But I hope you don't get too addicted to NZ mince and cheese pies or KFC! ;)
Too late for the mince and cheese pies. You Kiwis poisoned me with those pies.

As for KFC - I've had it since I was a kid. :p

577244 2007-08-08 08:43:00 Wasn't President Jimmy Carter a peanut farmer?

Or do the Americans call them peanut ranchers? Or wranglers?
