Their job is to teach, and not to enforce "God's will." Yes, I'm talking about those things called...yuck..."Catholic" schools. I went to one. I know. They say that "God loves everyone", but a boy cannot wear his hair in a pony tail, even though not allowing him to express himself teaches sexism, which is considered evil among Catholics. It is a whole loop of contradiction, and this is why I despise the modern Catholic school. A teacher should not act like a policeman! It is not illegal to own a cell phone outside of school grounds, therefore, they should not be allowed to confiscate it. When they learn how to actually do their jobs correctly, which is educate the children, I will listen to them and respect them. But not until this happens. This is why I love public school. Oh, and another thing. I find that many Catholics are hesitant to go to public school, even if they don't know anyone who goes there. This is because the teachers in Catholic schools spread propaganda, which is also considered "evil" by them (even though they do it), about how public school children are evil little wretches, and tear the Catholic schools apart during after-school religion programs for public school students. Now, the only thing I have against private schools are things like zqwerty said. I don't think it should be legal to hit any sort of child - leave the punishment up to the juvenile court. But - and this is why I don't consider it a big deal - if you send your child to a private school, you know that he may be hit and severely punished, and if a parent is fine with that, the problem is not the school, it's the parent. I know that many parents are going to be all over me for saying that, but just remember this - times have changed. It was okay to hit your child a long time ago, it show authority. But I consider it wrong, and so do many others. The thing that's wrong, though, is all the contradictions in a Catholic school, and that a parent does not know what's REALLY going on inside the school. The children are not being taught REAL Catholic attitudes. And now you know why I hate Catholic schools. Any questions? I'll be glad to debate...and win. |

This is a very large school with a fairly unusual (but not exclusively so) mix of deciles . We draw students from one of the meanest decile 1 areas, with huge welfare dependency, a major drug market, adult gangs, youth gangs and all the usual drama associated with those problems . In contrast, being a "school of choice" because of our social, sporting, cultural and academic reputation, we also draw decile 10 students from outside of our zone . Within our zone we draw from deciles 1 to 9 . Greg: School decile ratings quoted by the government and eduation department officials are fairy figures based on statistical data . If you had a Decile 10 zone in your area but drew no students from it because an exclusive private school was soakng them up, the presence of those "wealthy" residents would still affect your decile rating . At the school (in the real world) we rank our student draw by the deciles of their domicile . We see the human face of decile ratings . We also face rampant vandalism, arson, theft of school property and general mayhem after lights out every day of the week because of our proximity to decile 1-3 residential environments . Only a minor proportion of our vandalism etc is committed during school hours, and very little out of hours involves our students . We are not funded for security patrols of course, so we just have to clean up day after day after day after day . We are funded to repair the damage, but not to prevent it, and if our budget runs out, we bill the Ministry direct . . . . . . . . . . you get the picture? Incidentally, we are not fully funded for education either . Fully 50% of our operating expenses we have to raise ourselves, which amounts to $millions per year . If we stopped doing that, or the international student market dried up, we couldn't operate, end of story . Tomorrow's Schools would become yesterday's education system overnight . Only low decile schools are funded enough to avoid fundraising . Go figure . Cheers Billy 8-{) :waughh: |

I did 9 years voluntary work with the Citizens Advice Bureau and I am sad to say that we had a constant stream of young kids coming in (sent by learning institutions) who had projects to do on their "Rights". NEVER once in 9 years did anyone mention "Responsibilities" Ken |

| 578198 | 2007-08-09 00:09:00 | I was caned a lot as well . My worst & last case? I was a Barnado Boy . I got six of a walking stick cane at school . When I got "Home" I got six more . So there I am at 14, with blood runing down my legs, Laughing at them . At which the "Master" lost his cool & started to lay into me across my upper body & head . I took the cane off him & snapped it across my leg . I told him that if he ever touched me again he would suffer the consequences, (Words to that effect) . I never got caned again either at Home or School . I spent two days in sick bay whilst the cuts healed & the bruising went down sufficiently for me to work again . Apart from all that crap I still turned out ok . PJ |

| 578199 | 2007-08-09 00:59:00 | I also got the cane quite a lot. Doesn't bug me much, except the times when I was caned unjustly or excessively, eg I was a bit younger than my peers due to being raised a couple of levels. So I used to be bullied a fair bit and every time a teacher saw me being whacked about I'd get caned for "fighting". And getting six for being busted smoking was a bit over the top. I'd LOVE to meet a couple of my ex teachers now! But worst was when my mother's second husband came on the scene - he'd cane us for any sort of wrong doing. That brought a real s**t aspect into our otherwise happy homelife. Nevermind... he was a useless ucker then; now he's a frail and old useless ucker! :D |

I never got caned again either at Home or School. You are awesome! Stickin' it to the man! In my opinion, the cane was a lousy punishment. It didn't teach the child what will happen when they are older and they do wrong! Detention is much better, because it prevents them from doing their normal activities, just like jail! No, I'm not saying to put the children in jail. I'm just saying we should be preparing them for jail! Wow, that sounds strange. |

My history teacher (chief history examiner) last year said when he was a young lad, he had to watch fellow students get lashings by sadistic teachers for petty little things. Blood was often drawn, but what could the students do? Very little. He always wanted to teach but vowed to never hit a child. If a teacher has any kind of skill or decency, they will use other means to AVOID disruption and control his/her students. Respect is a two way road. Believe me, out of all my teachers, the ones we've loved the most were the ones who respected our views and opinions when justified and went out of their way to make the experience the most enjoyable and productive . In turn we'd interact and look forward to having that class, and put effort into learning! "Those Who Forget History Are Doomed to Repeat It" And that popular quote was on the front wall of my history class. |
