758950 2009-04-07 13:00:00 I have just been trying to download IE 8 for Vista.

Can't get it to install though.

The download box appears. I click run. It downloads. Then the boxes disappear and nothing happens. Have tried several times, and the same thing happens - nothing after the download.

I may try installing Chrome instead.

758951 2009-04-07 13:18:00 You may have to run it as admin Speedy Gonzales (78)
758952 2009-04-07 22:26:00 Yes, right click the install file and Select "Run as Administrator" Blam (54)
758953 2009-04-08 10:07:00 Is google toolbar the latest version??

You just go to manage addons in IE and highlight it then click on disable

No but I would uninstall that version of Java then update it

Uninstall Anvir or AVG, you dont need both

Tick these then tick fix checked

Like I told you, I have already disabled all the add ons in IE 7 - and it didn't help. Besides, on the page you linked to, it never said that any of those add-ons would stop IE 8 from installing - they just didn't work properly in the new browser.

"Anvir" is Anvir Task Manager - not an AV program.

I have ticked and fixed everything you told me to, but IE 8 still won't install. I'm currently waiting for the latest Java version to download (gone over my data cap, so slow internet), but you said you didn't think it would help anyway.

Any more ideas?

758954 2009-04-08 10:13:00 Re my problem installing IE 8 on Vista.....
I have just restarted my computer, and tried the IE 8 download again... and this time it worked OK with no problems.

758955 2009-04-08 10:25:00 Are you running a beta, or the final version of XP SP3 Sam??

I thought SP3 final was 5.1.2600 or something?? (I've just checked system information on here, it says 5.1.2600). Not 5.01.2600 (which shows in your log)?

One site says if youre using a beta version of a service pack IE 8 wont install. If this is the case, you'll have to uninstall it, then reinstall SP3 final.

Then install IE 8

Scrap that, looks like thats what HJT shows

758956 2009-04-10 08:39:00 Hi guys . I've got some good news - the problem has been solved!

I spent nearly all of yesterday trying to reinstall SP3, as Speedy pointed out that I might have an older version .

I downloaded the installer for the latest version of SP3, and tried to install it . But every time I tried, it would quit halfway through and display an "Access is denied" error message .

I then googled the problem on the web, and found this ( . microsoft . com/kb/949377/" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com) Knowledge Base article addressing the error . After ruling out the first two troubleshooting methods described there, I tried the third one: "Reset the registry and the file permissions" .

I did everything the article said to do, and when I ran the script it seemed to be working, but after a minute or so the screen suddenly went black before giving me a "REGISTRY_ERROR" BSOD message .

So, I then googled for a fix for this new problem with the Microsoft fix that was supposed to fix the Service Pack problem which was supposed to fix the IE 8 problem! :waughh:

And then, by some amazing stroke of luck, I came across this ( . mrfloppysa . com/wordpress/?p=13" target="_blank">www . mrfloppysa . com) life-saver of a blog, which described an almost exact replica of my problem (just without the IE issue) .

As soon as I deleted that one little line in Notepad, everything else just fell right in to place . The registry reset script suddenly ran fine, which in turn allowed the SP3 setup to run uninterrupted, which in turn (FINALLY) allowed the IE 8 setup to complete successfully!

A big thank you to everyone who has helped me - especially Speedy Gonzales, the one who ultimately lead me to the fix . :thanks
