759433 2009-03-25 08:45:00 Hi Team

My son wants to start using Skype to talk to his friends overseas but I know little about this technology. Are there security or data through-put issues?

I assume that both parties have to be on Skype to use it, and I want to know what problems might arise before I say yea or nay.

Cheers

759434 2009-03-25 08:57:00 I don't think there's any problems with skype

It's free to talk thru skype to another skype user. Nothing I can think of at the moment that can led to a downside..

Nope...

759435 2009-03-25 09:17:00 Skype is usually crystal clear, even with my wireless.

Only downside is the annoying sounds it makes for everything. You can easily disable them in options though

759436 2009-03-25 09:22:00 How safe is any of the Messaging programs ?? Someone is always finding ways to hack in and cause troubles - then its patched and all starts again.

One of the items I see a few of, is when a so called " friend" wants to send someone a file - sometimes theres a hidden payload, or if the persons account has been Hijacked, it may not even be who they think it is.

Old story - if a person uses common sense, theres usually not that much trouble. Have GOOD security software, and just monitor whats going on - not so much lean over their shoulder - but you get the idea.

My son uses a chat on the game site he goes to - he knows that if I catch him doing things hes not meant to - there goes the monthly payment I pay for him to use the advanced version of the game - AND I'll put a permanent block on the site Via the router - he doesn't know the router password.

759437 2009-03-25 09:42:00 Skype can be used to call normal land lines and cellphones but you need to put credit into your account to do this.
Skype-to-Skype calls are free anywhere in the world.

Only thing you need to watch out for is requests from people you don't know wanting to talk to you. You can just ignore them when they happen and 'Ban' that user from ever being able to contact you again.

759438 2009-03-25 19:06:00 Technically speaking, when you think about it, there's about as much chance of people listening into your Skype / VoIP Calls as there is of somebody phreaking your regular phone line.

Personally Im not the worlds biggest fan of Skype, and would much prefer GoogleTalk (Based around XMPP) or SIP. Then again, Im biased ;)

759439 2009-03-25 19:35:00 Thanks Guys.

I doubt very much that he or his friends have anything momentous or even mildly interesting to say to each other, and I was more concerned about potential hacking once a line was established through my router & other security firewalls.

I seem to recall reading that Skype relies on the user network of computers for international call routing, i.e. in theory a significant number of users have to leave/allow Skype access to their computer for the whole system to work effectively. Is this true?

Cheers

759441 2009-03-25 19:59:00 Yeah it is true, some of the stuff gets routed between Universities and things like that, and depending on your available bandwidth you can become a 'super node' (I think they call it) yourself, unless you enable / disable that in the advanced options.

Another reason why Im a fan of Google Talk, no routing your calls through other random locations, no having other calls routed through you. Its just not necessary if you ask me!
