760053 2009-03-27 09:35:00 Hi I have bought a laptop so we can access wireless internet while traveling in the US. I want to use emails, check the bank and other things. I was wondering what settings to use so I have some security. I think there is some encryption which can be used and I have had a look in the net but are not sure.
Thanks,
asdex

760054 2009-03-27 09:51:00 So you mean when connecting to hotspots/cafe public wireless networks etc?

Easiest thing would be to use a free VPN service such as hotspot shield which will create a powerful tunnel that'll hide everything you do from prying eyes

And make sure you use a strong firewall, such as Comodo, or Zonealarm at least.

And if you really want to be safe, follow the instructions here on how to disable file sharing and ad-hoc networking, that can exploit your PC in public hotspots:

Or, do you mean creating security for wireless networks?

Go with WPA2 Enterprise if your router allows it, otherwise WPA Personal(PSK) is fine

Bear in mind if someone is really trying to hack into your network, they will probably be able to do so eventually, if they know what they are doing, and its not actually very difficult either.

760055 2009-03-27 10:00:00 I was wondering what settings to use so I have some security One thing you wont have any control over is where the signal is coming from - if the security on the hotspot is none, or low that will always be your weakest link.

Some laptops, even new ones cant handle the security above wep128 - this week alone I have dealt with 3 like that - anything higher than wep128 was a no go.

760057 2009-03-28 01:16:00 You also need to know what hot spot you are connecting to.

I have read that in airports, some people with their own internet access, may set up a hot spot, so unawares go onto that to get on the net and do their banking, they secretly snoop all their details.

Exactly why you use a firewall and a VPN service
