759929 2009-03-26 22:38:00 I'm just scouting around looking to see what there is out there to help me manage printing on our school network, and wondered if there was anyone out there who could recommend one that they've used.

Ideally I'd like to be able to monitor usage, and automatically block jobs from students that have printed an excessive amount. It would also to be good to have print jobs from staff be able to be categorised by department. Oh, and cheap too

Any thoughts from you all would be much appreciated

759930 2009-03-26 22:53:00 Is the school running the PC's and printer Via a server - if so you can alter settings relating to logins. How many accounts are you needing control over. wainuitech (129)
759931 2009-03-26 22:58:00 We currently have just under 700 student and 50 staff users, all served by Windows 2003 Server. Is there some "print management" setting in Active Directory I've missed? davehartley (3487)
759932 2009-03-26 23:31:00 I'm extremely rusty on server as it's been a while, but yes the options should be in there as wainuitech said Nictech (14748)
759933 2009-03-26 23:34:00 A friend of mine is a computer technician for a school around about your size. They're using something by Gaia - www.gaiacomputing.com.au

I'll have to check with him what his thoughts are on it though.

759934 2009-03-26 23:35:00 I was more or less information gathering as to numbers / Setup.

I have set up Server 2003 with print restrictions but not that many log ins / users.

If you wanted monitor usage - I did find This place (www.papercut.com) - the usage monitor is free - they do have several other types of software that looks like it will do what you want, there is a trial etc - but the licenses are not exactly cheap.

I'm sure someone who has more experience in bigger corp places, or schools will be able to advice better.

Edited:This here (www.dabcc.com) MS's R2 Print Management Snap-In May be of some interest ?
