580120 2007-08-13 03:40:00 18 is too low, but compulsory defensive driving courses are the go. I did an advanced one years ago and it saved my life a few times.

For those who say it's a matter of maturity- that's not all. Recent study has shown that the brain is not developed enough until about the age of 25.

So it's not a psychological deficency, it's a physiological one and there's not much you can do about that.

I personally would prefer a 'young person' with an underdeveloped brain, raging hormones and a fast car be locked up before they get out the gate.

Now we've just got to get rid of those a***holes in 4 wheel drives :)

580121 2007-08-13 03:47:00 Insurance mortality figures show that in NZ the chances of dying between the ages of 15 and 25 for males is the same as that between 60 and 65.
I think that says it all.

"The graveyards are full of young men who believed in their own immortality"
Quote from a Wall plaque in the student crewroom at No1 FTS, RAF Linton on Ouse. I was the navigation instructor there in the early 70s.
Low flying for a single pilot officer 50 feet.
Low flying for a married Flight Lieutenant 50 feet plus 100 ft for the wife and an additional 50 ft for each child. No brownie points for working out which group flew into the ground in greater numbers.
During the Viet Nam war the New Zealand armed forces lost more members to traffic accidents in New Zealand than they lost in Viet Nam where people were trying to kill each other.

580124 2007-08-13 04:19:00 wratterus, I have never had any tickets either, though I have had an accident, but that was not my fault...

I believe that it a lot of the *what is that word?* responsibility (maybe not the best word...) lyes with the parents on how they bring up thier children... That is the way I see it...

Were both age groups mortality stats all Driving, or were the later due to medical conditions?

To compare: How many armed forces vs How many drivers on the road at that time .

I guess i was a boy racer when the Vietnam war was on . I just missed the draft .

580127 2007-08-13 04:30:00 Most definitely, with a longer driver training period required before the driver can get their full lisence as well as some form of cc or engine limitation rating on the lisence making it illegal for under 25's to drive suped up boyracer cars. winmacguy (3367)
580128 2007-08-13 04:35:00 Bring back the Fiat Bambino for the under 25's. 900cc I think they were. Bantu (52)

Road traffic injuries were the biggest cause of death for the 15-24 year age group.
