2009-03-27 21:45:00 | Thanks, Wainuitech. I have taken on board and appreciate all of your comments. If the troublesome PC was here with me I would be able to take a closer, in-depth look at it but it is up and running at my Mate's house miles away and I have only had one brief session, during which I had a good cleanout. The CD drive problem came to light during my examination and even though my mate never used or needed it, I took it upon myself to rectify the problem. He is now keen to have it sorted and the PC upgaded with more RAM and a DVD RW drive to replace the CD ROM drive, so it looks as though I have made a rod for my own back! I have pointed out to him that This upgrade would not be viable without replacing his 40GB HDD with say a 200GB HDD and adding up the cost of the 3 components (£100 +), he should weigh this up against the option of buying a new PC. This Guy is older than me and I will be 69 next week, so Imagine the difficulty talking to him in computer terms. I have spent my working life in radio/TV/electronics (now retired) and he has always been a long distance driver. The best scenario is that I get his CD working and do a runner. By the way, I am doing it as a favour, not for reward of any kind.

2009-03-27 22:04:00 | Thanks, Sweep. Shows how rusty I am. I seem to have forgotten much of what I learned in the past. I have been retired and out of action for some years and not dealing with other peoples technical problems. I have a good, reliable PC system and have been lucky enough to have few problems with it.

You hopefully have a Primary and Secondary IDE connection on the Motherboard. Oh. Also use 80 wire IDE cables as the one(s) you have at the moment will probably be 40 wire. HTH. |

2009-03-27 22:24:00 | Is this person using this PC on the internet?? And on broadband? If he is, use teamviewer (ww.teamviewer.com) install it on yours and his. Get him to give you the id and password (that appears on his version of teamviewer). Give him the link to that autofix file (or send it to him, once you connect). Tell him to run it. Then you'll see if that file fixed the cd prob (Once you connect, you'll see whats on his screen).

2009-03-27 23:33:00 | Speedy. Believe this - when I looked at his computer he had 18 unread emails via AOL and when I pointed this out he said "I can't be bothered with those, delete them" and added that the only time the PC is used on line is when his grand daughter visits! I really shouldn't have got involved . | blanco (11336) | |
