But if a magazine rang me to do a piece I'd make sure SPYWARE was mentioned 1000 times.

Maybe you could write an eloquent letter to the editors of PC World NZ (and have it published) talking about Juha's article in the Listener. I have had a few letter's published both in PC World and Net Guide.

580575 2007-08-14 02:40:00 Maybe he is pushing Norton/McAfee as reputable so he can get his name in big print.

580576 2007-08-14 03:10:00 It's a sidebar to the main article, and your precis of it makes it out to be much worse that it is. Spyware is never mentioned. I agree he should have included it, but why call this thread 'JS on spyware' when that is NOT what the article is about?.

Install AV - the rest if the paragraph "...Trust reputable vendors only such as McA or Nortons, as a common virus tactic is to offer "free" security checks".
Given the brevity of the article, not banging on about NOD32 and the rest doesn't seem unreasonable, and the above advice is sound for newbies seeing 'security warning' webpage ads flashing everywhere.

Most pcs DO have a firewall - the windows firewall. Probably a good idea for many to install another one, but I get along fine without, and once again, this sidebar is hardly the place for telling people how to install and debug a 3rd party firewall. The statement is accurate.

The second part contains things not to do - opening suspicious emails, replying to spam, opening unknown files.

For a short bullet-point article in a general readership magazine, it's fine IMO.

The problem is, are Nortons and McAfee reputable?

Many here would say no, many would say they suck big time.

Adding a few more names to the list of 'reputable' vendors is hardly banging on about it. IMO, that would have been the more responsible thing to do, indeed what actually occurred was to give a big thumbs up to the status quo, which obviously ain't working too well, now is it.

If you can't meet certain standards, then you are in danger of exacerbating the situation. In this case, I don't believe the bar was set high enough.

580577 2007-08-14 05:46:00 IN the end, he is just pushing the same ol mish-mash on the people that all the rest of the "I.T. media-types" do. How often do they ever mention anything other than McAfee or Nortons? You never hear anything of free alternatives (AVG, Avast, amongst others, but these 2 have a reasonable following here).
Nor do you hear anything about Spybot, very seldom if ever do you hear of AdAware.
Its the same ol bullsh*t, just a different day

580578 2007-08-14 05:47:00 NetGuide is actually quite good at reviewing alternative anti virus software. winmacguy (3367)
580579 2007-08-14 07:32:00 ...
No mention of anti-spyware.
Apparently NOD32, AVG, Avast etc are complete rubbish.
And have you all found your standard firewall that came with your PC?

Silly bugger also forgot to mention ditching Windows (and all that friggin' anti-this-and-that-b@stardry) and going to MacOSX or Ubuntu etc. Juha is an avid FreeBSD user himself.

580580 2007-08-14 09:14:00 BS. If apparently the readers of the magazine are tech illiterate and apparently don't even know about anti-spyware etc, asking them to changes OS's is a tad rich. I've been using comps for ages and I still don't want to change so what chance do others have? beeswax34 (63)

Have you used MacOSX or Ubuntu? No anti-sh1tware to deal with. Simpler than Windows I think.
