580270 2007-09-12 03:37:00 In reply to your first paragraph: Until around a year ago, I knew nothing about cars. I was looking at cars on Trademe and any time I wouldn't know what something meant I would go ask my dad. He told me that the type of exhaust helps. I basically only know what he has told me, so I can't comment on this.

Helps with what?
Your car will do 100Km + with a standard exhaust.
Fuel wise you may get a very minor % improvement.
Power wise it will make so little different you will not see it.
You could hook it up to a computer and see how much difference it makes but you will see very little difference even then.

I will ask my dad, and see what he says. BUT as I've said: I can not comment on this, what I know about cars he has told me/shown me, this is what he said: I just said "ok".

===============

However even a minor improvement in petrol/fuel is fine.

-Another reason not to spend 'a few hundred dolors to remove it'. If it's making me use even 0.0001% less petrol then it wouldn't be worth it to remove it. If everyone used that much less it would add up =)

580272 2007-09-12 06:56:00 I wouldn't waste my money on an aftermarket exhaust, but if the car came with one, I wouldn't spend any money removing it unless it was really annoying. Greven (91)
580273 2007-09-12 06:59:00 please remember that engines are specially tuned for a specific backpressure, and that by replacing the standard exhaust system with larger pipes can actually decrease performance.

getting a loud muffler does very little if anything unless you tune for it and then it's not much

I take away the fact that (I think) that coby mufflers and big bore exhausts help performance. - As I've said, I learnt everything I know about cars from my dad, I've just asked him about it again and he said that they don't really help much. AND that even though they do SLIGHTLY help, it's not even noticeable.

But I'm NOT going to remove it, because it's not bothering me, it's in the legal limit, it's not morally wrong and it's not worth $150+ to do it.

If it's any consolation I told my parents I was never going to do anything illegal. I was wrong, very wrong:o

It depends on person to person if they are going to break the law. I'm not only telling my parents I'm not going to break the law, I'm telling you too.
Teens shouldn't always be generilised.

I don't know anyone personally on this forum, but at a guess I would say 100% of the forum members that drive have broken driving laws at least once if not daily and that means speeding.'
I would also say that the majority of members have brokeb some criminal law as well.
You all know who you are and what you have done:D

580279 2007-09-14 01:35:00 Just out of curiosity - can anyone see that there are two (or more) sides to this? (all valid).

So yeah, if you do think the driving age should be raised - do you see that there are reasons why it shouldn't be too? (and vise versa)..

I think it shouldn't be raised, but I see reasons why it should too.
