580210 2007-08-20 22:19:00 Oh my giddy Aunt, That made me laugh. What the hell are you on about?

Never mind, as long as your medical condition keeps you off the road I don't really need to worry.

It's obvious what I'm on about. Besides, my 'medical condition' is epilepsy - so as long as I don't have another seizure, I should be on the road by this time next year.

580211 2007-08-20 22:23:00 where the hell are you from? 99.9% of those dickheads are over 25 anyway

Right you are.

580212 2007-08-20 22:24:00 xcuse my rant, even on my street we have had 4 accidents in the last 3 weeks from young hoons in their cars. Nice cars too, oh well, good job I say.

Hmmm... I wonder if one of those 'young hoons in their cars' was you?

580213 2007-08-20 22:28:00 Yes, I started driving when I was 15. But there is a big difference between the 1970's and now. Cars were more expensive (but gas was cheaper!!) and on the whole a hell of a lot slower - the only cars back then capable of easily acheiving in excess of 100mph were V8's and Mazda RX7's - both expensive options for a teenager to own. They are readily available today and relatively cheap. And there were a lot less vehicles (read: "other idiots") on the road too.

Yes, I am going to allow my daughter to learn to drive (she's 15 now), but there will be rules around when and how and they will be strictly enforced by me. My son is nearly 14 - he may not get the privilege of learning to drive at 15 unless there is a big attitude change from him in the next 12 months...

Well, I suppose that's reasonable... but I wouldn't like to see your son's reaction... "you let her get a license when she was 15. WHY CAN'T I? IT'S NOT FAIR!!!"

But also, in the '70s, the license system was far more lenient... learner license for as little time period as you wanted and then full... license system has gotten tougher now too.

580214 2007-08-20 22:31:00 The NZ Forces lost 33 Killed in Viet Nam - why so few? They were bloody good soldiers and were aware of the risks. Over the same period the NZ Armed Forces lost more people on NZ Roads. Why, everybody thinks they are a good driver, and accidents are what happens to others.
The young foolishly believe they are bomb proof, this coupled with low experience can probably be attributed to their fatality rate. For age group 60 - 65 most mortality is due to natural causes.
For the15-25 age group it is the immaturity of themselves or their associates - ie the young idiot behind the wheel is not always the victim or the only victim.
Two friends of mine each lost their sons in an accident where the 18yo intoxicated driver of the car escaped unscathed. Perhaps there is some justice because he committed the same crass act a few months later and was the sole victim - losing his license did not stop him from driving - it took a lamp post to do it.

You say the guy was 18. Not 15. And the age group of 'immature' drivers is 15-25. You can't have the age at 25.

[edited for swearing]One has to wonder if your inability to drive, regardless of age, isn't due to your lack of maturity rather than your medical condition.

Anyway, children under 18 shouldn't be allowed to drive on public roads, at all, without supervision.
