| 580200 | 2007-08-18 22:40:00 | Motorbikes are bloody dangerous. I wont let my kids have roadbikes until they are about 40. I have had the following bikes in order: CZ jawa 125, Suzuki TS90R, Aeriel 500, Norton Commando, Yamaha XS2 650, Kawa Z900A4 (1200 big bore kit) Honda 250XLS and bloody lucky to still be alive with the crashes. Most crashes caused by dumb woman drivers who always say I didnt see you as you are lying on the ground. Onc e the kids transitioned from bikes they would still give it death in cars because they are protected by a steel cage. tedheath |

You have answered your own problem there, its not the bikes that are the issue, its the people in the cars. Not riding bikes is not a smart solution to the problem. Drivers need to be alot more aware, for motorbikes, pushbikes, kids on side of road. Indicating before changing lanes etc. Once the kids transitioned from bikes they would still give it death in cars because they are protected by a steel cage. I disagree. You are more aware of what can go wrong when on a bike so you have more respect for the road and other road users. |

Did you now that statistically men have far more life threatening accidents than women who tend to just bump more things in the supermarket so to speak. Maybe these women run you over on the ground because they know you. |

| 580204 | 2007-08-20 00:55:00 | I learned to drive at 8. Living in the country I would drive cars and trucks on the farm helping load hay or vegetables. I had my car license the day i was 15, sat my written a week prior to turning 15. Truck license at 18. First car was an Austin A40 which could barely break the speed limit. Since cars were expensive then in relation to wages two of my Uncles used to share a car which at the time was not uncommon. Now in Auckland I am currently teaching my 12 year old daughter to drive during school holidays, but learning off road as I did. Cars are faster now days and a lot more traffic and idiots to deal with on the roads, hopefully the age gets raised before she sits her license, but even if it doesn't her first car will probably be likes of a Toyota Echo or something else small and not overpowered. She will do a defensive driving course and anything else I can find to help her combat todays traffic. Right. You're contradicting yourself here. You learned to drive aged eight, got your license aged 15, got your truck license aged 18. You got your car license the day you turned 15, yet you didn't sit the theory test till a week later. You are teaching your daughter to drive when she is three years too young, yet you say she is too young to get a license at 15. I do agree with your making her do a defensive driving course and getting a lower-powered car like an Echo for her first car, but how can you think twelve is old enough and fifteen is too young? Finally, if the age is raised, it won't do a thing to reduce the number of idiots or traffic on the road. People who are idiots while driving were either born to be idiots while driving or were taught by someone who was born to be an idiot while driving. By that aspect, an eighteen year old in that situation is just as risky, if not more risky, than a fifteen year old in that situation. They could quite well be more risky if there is alcohol involved, as they can get alcohol very easily, whereas fifteen-year-olds can't, unless they either have a hefty lot of money to bribe someone, a very friendly casual acquaintance or shopkeeper who is happy to risk a ten thousand dollar fine, or very irresponsible parents or guardians. |

| 580205 | 2007-08-20 00:57:00 | I resent that comment . Im 21, and have had my full license now for over 4 years . I am in my 3rd year at university doing electrical engineering, and also have a part-time job so i can cover all my costs, rent etc each week, and no, i dont get any drug/dole money . Any of you people out there that are from UC will know how hard engineers have to work at uni! My dad was more than happy to take me out in our wee 1 . 3 ford laser in the weekend when i had just got my learners at 15 and teach me how to drive a manual properly . I haven't had a single incident in a car ever, no speeding tickets, nothing . You never hear about the ones aged 18-24 who DONT crash/drink-drive/speed etc do you . . . . Man, what kinda job do ya have if ya have to work ya butt of just to get a rust-bucket? Stephen, you are da man! If there were only more people like you! |

| 580206 | 2007-08-20 01:02:00 | Jumping off a cliff was a figure of speech. Not meant to be taken literally. It means that just because other countries in the world have their driving age higher is not a reason for us to raise ours. Since when was this Planet Conformatron? Secondly, most countries that DO have higher driving ages - including England - have it that you have a learner's permit while you learn to drive then get your full. this allows you even less experience before taking on the responsibility of carrying passengers in your car, and you should be able to take passengers by the time you leave school - which is why we need a lower driving age - our system is tougher than other countries that have it at 18. Thirdly, people at age 18 can get alcohol legally and this means that they are more likely to get drunk while on a learner's license with not much driving experience and then they will be more likely to speed, breach their license conditions and do other silly things including killing themselves and others in a car accident. Fourthly, I have had my driver's education postponed for a year now because of medical conditions, and I see absolutely no reason why it should be postponed any longer because a bunch of a few demonic hoons like you seem to be finding it very difficult to lower their speedo to below 120 kph. The police are far too lenient and they should have a zero tolerance policy - you get caught speeding, you get your license suspended. Okay, maybe not if it was just 10 kph over the limit, you would just get a ticket, but any more than that, there goes your license - if you require a license for your job, eg if you live out in the what-whats and there's no bus or train or carpool to get you to work, or you are for example a courier who needs the car to deliver things or a builder who needs a van for his supplies, you could be issued with a worker's permit - you are only allowed to drive for employment purposes and your employer should be told immediately by Land and Transport what has happened and why. Finally, I don't like being told to get the f*ck out or to get stuffed and I also do not like being called names like freakin' itard. Die in a fire. Oh my giddy Aunt, That made me laugh. What the hell are you on about? Never mind, as long as your medical condition keeps you off the road I don't really need to worry. |
