I'm told that cars were very expensive for the generation before ours because there weren't many imports to bring the price down. Also, people didn't pay off their cars - they paid the full amount before driving it home. |

My parents ( nearly 2 generations before you, probably ) had never owned a car before I bought mine. It was considered an unneccessary luxury in a city with public transport (Yes, there used to be...). even though my father had a decent job. But most mothers stayed at home, so one-income families were the norm. I was lucky enough to fluke a very good job for my age in my 20s, yet had to save the full price before any dealer would sell to me ( Mind you, being female was an extra hindrance to getting credit then) It was a huge purchase. And my price choices were restricted to 2nd hand British cars. Not until Japanese imports became common did car prices come down to a level where teenagers could buy their own. Edit: And I forgot to add that alcohol was not only harder to get then, it was also proportionately dearer. |

You had to buy the rear seat after you got the car. Thank christ we deregulated all our dumb laws in the eighties. tedheath |

| 580193 | 2007-08-18 05:43:00 | Seriously, young f**kers today have no sense of earning a car or respecting it. They just get one off the drug money or save their dole money or whatever, I think I may have been in the last of generation of working your butt off to get a rust bucket. These days people dont even ask to learn how to drive, they just jump in and figure it out as they go. The worst way if there is noone to guide you. i hate driving now as too many dickheads around who are just either blind/dumb/stupid/ignorant or just plain retarded. where the hell are you from? 99.9% of those dickheads are over 25 anyway |

| 580194 | 2007-08-18 05:48:00 | xcuse my rant, even on my street we have had 4 accidents in the last 3 weeks from young hoons in their cars. Nice cars too, oh well, good job I say. | rob_on_guitar (4196) | ||
| 580195 | 2007-08-18 05:50:00 | I resent that comment. Im 21, and have had my full license now for over 4 years. I am in my 3rd year at university doing electrical engineering, and also have a part-time job so i can cover all my costs, rent etc each week, and no, i dont get any drug/dole money. Any of you people out there that are from UC will know how hard engineers have to work at uni! My dad was more than happy to take me out in our wee 1.3 ford laser in the weekend when i had just got my learners at 15 and teach me how to drive a manual properly. I haven't had a single incident in a car ever, no speeding tickets, nothing. You never hear about the ones aged 18-24 who DONT crash/drink-drive/speed etc do you.... Man, what kinda job do ya have if ya have to work ya butt of just to get a rust-bucket? Yay a reaction. |

| 580196 | 2007-08-18 06:20:00 | xcuse my rant, even on my street we have had 4 accidents in the last 3 weeks from young hoons in their cars. Nice cars too, oh well, good job I say. on my road we're yet to have a young guy crash while "hooning". we've had a guy in his 50's write off a '66 zepher a woman in her 30's crash on a straight, flipping her car a woman in her 30's lose control somehow, clip an oncoming van, launch off bank, nosedive into a tree stump, ripping it out of the ground and flipping her car, landing on her roof on my fence. a family lock up their 4wd, somehow, and slide into a ditch. on a straight. another 4wd, male in his 30's come out of a corner too fast, sliding off road and rolling assorted older drivers all lauching off a corner at the end of a straight. even a truck with a flatbed trailer carrying a 18 ton digger did a corner too fast and lost the digger and ONE learner rear ended my car (www.imagef1.net.nz) while i was indicating to turn right and was waiting for traffic. it was wet and the van he was driving locked up, as they do, and he slid into me at quite a speed. inexperience, not hooning. he was ticketed with failing to stop and my insurance company got him to pay no problem. had the adult passenger told him to slow earlier the accident may have been avoided. the problem is that we only hear of teens crashing on the news because that's what gets good ratings. as a result teens and boy racers are all grouped together in one big scapegoat. while i'm sure teens may be a bit overrepresented, it is largely due to inexperience. hell on my restricted i backed into a parked car (it was dark, car was black, i was noob). i tracked down the owner and then found out how insurance companies will charge $1300 for a dent on one panel and my excess was 1200:annoyed: (not a scratch on my starlet) |

| 580197 | 2007-08-18 08:30:00 | I had a 15 yo girl crash into my car parked in my driveway too. I had to laugh it was funny as, i knew it was going to happen as soon as i saw her. She planted on the gas instead of the brakes. She freaked. The bill was hefty too but lucky for her daddy came to the rescue. | rob_on_guitar (4196) | ||
| 580198 | 2007-08-18 14:24:00 | How about make the car driving age 18, but allow you at 15+ to ride a motorbike. Being on a motorbike makes you ALOT more aware of... everything. These skills would be very transferable to driving a car when you reach 18. Would also make drivers alot more aware of motorcyclists... and reduce congestion on our roads... |
