New build PC thx to the folks on this forum. Running well upto now. Bought and installed Empire Total War and have had a number of issues with freezes etc. Upgraded the card drivers via online updates and have a query around the 'cut scenes' used in the game. The game itself plays fine at relatively high levels of detail etc but I notice in the cut scenes between some of the major battles there is not any smooth colour transition, i.e you can physically see approx 5mm square blocks that blend onscreen to make up the colour of an object such as sky, land etc. The time of colour issues you would see on an XP machine as it boots up with windows logo etc not being ultra crisp. Most noticeable for example during the initial movie when the screen goes from a dark blue to foggy..You can see lots of little squares of colour moving outwards as the screen colour changes into the mist..

Also, there appears to be a glitching approx 1 inch wide from time to time that flickers across the screen side to side horizontally..Almost impercebtible at times but definitely a noticeable 'effect' on the screen - which is an LG 22 inch widescreen..Only in the cut scenes I may add - general gameplay looks good apart from the buggy software etc.

Any tips or pointers would be great thanks. Just want to check the card is working correctly or if I have some setting wrong.

Thanks

759961 2009-03-27 02:49:00 When you say online updates, I hope you dont mean through windowsupdate??

DON'T use / install any updates from there. They can screw a system up. Get them from whoever made the card.

Either ASUS (they dont really update them, and drivers can be buggy). The drivers I installed from the ASUS site, (ATI but not the same card as yours), left a white pixel on this LCD (I thought it was a dead pixel, it wasnt, it was a bug / glitch in the drivers). Or from the ATI site

759962 2009-03-27 03:09:00 Sorry Speedy..What I meant to say was I downloaded drivers online ( from ATI) as the ASUS site was down and the drivers from the install disc were approx 7 months old !!! ( only found that out when Empire Total War kept crashing and i checked their dates)..

However still not resolved the blocky colour.

Will try a movie etc as well. I was of the understanding the EAH 4870 would drive a 22inch screen satisfactorily.

759963 2009-03-27 03:19:00 If my puny 3450 can manage a 22', I'm pretty sure a 4870 can :p Have you configured the settings in CCC??. Is it set at the right resolution? Speedy Gonzales (78)
759964 2009-03-27 03:21:00 It's a software problem, doubt it's a physical problem with the card. I have the 4870 and it's a wonderful card. qazwsxokmijn (102)
759965 2009-03-27 04:23:00 Is it set at a high resoltion? And what is the refresh rate? Blam (54)
759966 2009-03-27 05:04:00 Patch the game.
And if it still happens try reverting to an earlier driver if you are using the latest.

759967 2009-03-30 01:25:00 Hey guys

Tried a couple of DVD's and they played sweet.. VLC only plays them in approx 60% of the screen however. I can maximise it but the quality suffers a tad...

Regarding empire total war - buggy as a piece of sticky fly paper.

Constant crashes to desktop - ntll.dll issues.. Crashes followed by a noise that sounds like a machine gun that wont go away until I restart the machine.

Only way to upgrade ( i've found) is to wait for Steam to upgrade - cant find any downloads online as executables. It crashes around 3 times out of 6.. One of the reasons I played consoles for the last 6 years + for gaming...

Thx for your help as always.

759968 2009-03-30 02:28:00 empire total war has a few bugs, like when I select this one particular fleet it crashes to desktop without fail. also had it crash to desktop on a few other occassions aswel. I'm using a 9600GT graphics card & have set all graphics to low for better performance (I need more RAM :( ). so it definately shouldnt be the card Nictech (14748)
