760906 2009-03-30 22:54:00 HI
I'm looking at rebuilding a PC and wanting to keep the budget as low as possible . I intend to use the PC for web browsing ,music ,games for the kids and maybe a couple of first person shooter games for myself .
What I'm lookign at so far is
mobo gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H
cpu Phenom X3 8650
ram 4Gb generic DDR2 PC6400
power supply 500watt

I have an old case and monitor I'll keep using and will try to live with the onboard graphics untill more money is availible .I'm looking for feedback on the these parts and if there are any better value parts i should look at .
cheers

Firstly, don't get generic RAM or PSU, if you want the PC to last long

And just get a dual core, if Web browsing/Music and Gaming is your thing.

760908 2009-03-31 00:52:00 Welcome to PF1 -

just adding to what Blam mentioned - IF you want to use 4GB of RAM - you will have to have a 64bit operating system - the usual OS's that most people have are 32bit - which will only see 3GB.

Gigabyte are a good brand for boards, and they usually come with a 3 year warranty.

Power Supply - either Corsair or Enermax - bit more expensive, but a PSU is one of the items you dont want to skimp on.

760909 2009-03-31 01:12:00 I'd take the CPU down to a dual core (could probably save some money doing this) and just to add another voice to what the others are saying, I'd make sure I got a better quality power supply. I've got an Enermax PSU which I've been using for about 3 years now, other parts have been changed and upgraded, but the PSU has given me no troubles. Faded_Mantis (79)

Sigh. Buy an Xbox or PS3 then.
Graphics is the single most important thing in a gaming PC. FPSs generally are quite high-end too as opposed to other types of games.

And I'd put an Intel CPU in everything other than a low end gaming box.
Either wait and upgrade properly or think about consoles instead for the gaming side of things.

760911 2009-03-31 02:22:00 Stick with 2gb of decent RAM(Gskill, Corsair, OCZ)then upgrade at a later stage.

As PCTek said, gaming will be rubbish with onboard graphics. Get a 9600GSO at least.

How about this mobo instead?:

Cheaper, but SLI

760912 2009-03-31 08:09:00 thanks everyone for the coments . I'll upgrade the PSU and ram to name brand and stick to 2gb .

What is required to go to 64bit system ? I read that the mobo and CPU will do it , other than a 64bit version of vista what else is needed?

I will try to nudge the budget up to a dedicated video card and was thinking of a HD4760 with 512mb . does anyone have experiance with this card ?

I'm definitely in the low end gaming . toughest task for this machine will be far cry or bf2 othewise its old civ games or tetris for the kids .

thanks again

760913 2009-03-31 08:14:00 Main thing with 64 bit is making sure all your applications and other hardware such as printers etc are capable of using it or at least have new drivers that are. gary67 (56)
760914 2009-03-31 09:03:00 Yep, your CPU needs to suport 64bit, and thats it.

Make sure you get Vista 64bit.

And I assume you mean the 4670, its a good card, decent for its price.
