760389 2009-03-29 03:21:00 I got a external hard drive that was used with XP and worked well as you would expect.
Now I plug it into my Vista machine and it crashes it with a BSOD, I can't figure out why.

The hard drive works perfectly well on other XP machines that I have tried it on.

760390 2009-03-29 03:30:00 What does it say on the BSOD?

Could be a lack of system power.

760391 2009-03-29 05:56:00 Not sure what you mean by system power.
The external is powered by the mains
The comp has a 750w PSU

Blue screen flashed off before I could read it.
Said something about dumping something then the monitor went to sleep
Its set to not reboot when bsod so I had to restart it from there
Restarted fine after it was unplugged

760392 2009-03-29 07:55:00 Right click My computer>Properties>Click "Advanced System Settings" on left pane>Under start up and recovery select "settings">Untick "Automatically restart"

Now you can have a look at what the bsod says and post it back here

760393 2009-03-29 08:56:00 Have you tried different USB ports on the PC.

I have seen it before that some ports cant handle these devices, try all the rear ports if you haven't already.

760394 2009-03-29 09:18:00 Tried all ports cept those the mouse and keyboard are plugged into with the same result.
All ports worked fine when this computer was running XP also so its got to be something to do with XP/Vista
I checked it again with a XP laptop and works fine.

BSOD =

760395 2009-03-29 09:36:00 is SP1 installed?

www.neowin.net

Sounds like a known problem

760396 2009-03-29 09:36:00 Bit of research shows its a driver problem - have a read of This form (www.techsupportforum.com) - follow the advice from the Microsoft tech team - last post.

What you can also do is click start - type in Reliability - select reliability and performance, select Reliability Monitor - there you will see red circles with x's, click to open them in relation to the crash - it should tell you exactly what the problem is.

760397 2009-03-29 10:10:00 There were no reliability entries for today at all.
I followed the MS tech advice and nothing happened. The verifier did nothing and I followed the instructions exactly.

Yes Blam, sp1 is installed.

760398 2009-03-29 10:36:00 Your only option here is to uninstall SP1. As there seems to be a driver incompatibility eith Vista SP1 Blam (54)
