| 760271 | 2009-03-28 21:03:00 | A friend of mine had been having computer trouble, always freezing and crashing, so I recommended she try PC Doctor, she downloaded it but it was a .rar file and she didn't have winzip or winrar so I gave her the link to download the free trial which she did, then as soon as she went to install it, her computer froze up so she had to restart it, ever since then it hasn't been working, it gets to the welcome screen (Windows XP) and then restarts itself, she had to turn it off by the power button, when she tried turning it on a bit later, the same thing happened - got to the welcome screen then restarted itself. She tried putting it into safe mode but with no luck! Any suggestions? :illogical Edited to add - When it attempts to startup it says "Checking system file Fat32" - after that it restarts! |

Most downloads are either exe or zipped Remove the hdd and put it in a working system and scan it for viruses etc. If its an IDE hdd remember to jumper it properly first Whats the specs of the laptop is it AMD and was SP3 installed on it recently? |

When Booting the PC-tap F8 and select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"(hopefully this'll work if normal Safe Mode doesn't!) At the Command prompt, type in "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" and press enter(without quotations) When System restore pops up, restore back to a point before winrar was installed. Blam |

| 760277 | 2009-03-29 03:05:00 | A friend of mine had been having computer trouble, always freezing and crashing, so I recommended she try PC Doctor The first thing to do would be establish whether she is likely to have a hardware or software problem. Does it freeze/crash in safe mode for instance? Did she have anti-malware installed - updated and scanning regularly? What changes if any had she made before the problem started? Those diag programs are a waste of time. |

She doesn't know alot about computers, I had suggested she run a HijackThis scan, but didn't quite get that far. I had suggested PC Doc as something in the registry was corrupted, an error message kept popping up every 5mins and PC Doctor fixes that... I thought that was the only good thing to fix registry problems until I saw Speedy's sig with a free registry cleaner! IF she gets the computer back up and is stable, can anyone recommend any good cleaners she could use? I know I have had help on here in the past and you guys were great! I think she also has malware bytes, but that came up as clear. I'll get her to do a HJT scan IF the computer becomes stable again! :) |
