760245 2009-03-28 17:49:00 Have an XP box I am loaning to a friend. It contains private data in My Documents and want to protect this. Can I cut my documents and put them on a flash drive then put it back later.I know in linux there are a lot of hidden folders and it would not be possible but what about XP.Also how secure would
"make this folder private" be?

760246 2009-03-28 19:16:00 Copy the files to a flash drive, and depending on how important they are to you, shred them. pcuser42 (130)
760247 2009-03-28 20:04:00 There are a lot of files and I would like to just move the whole folder to my flash drive then put it back when i get the puter back.He will get a new "my documents folder" when he sets himself up as a user. kjaada (253)
760248 2009-03-28 20:45:00 If it was me, I'd get another hard drive and swap them.
Keep yours, do a new install for him.

Who knows what kind of mess it will come back in?

760249 2009-03-28 22:15:00 Not really worried as he is,a friend, and an expert in the business.I just do not want him (because he is an expert) to be able to access my personal details.ie:
list of female friends etc LOL.I am 99% happy to give him my box with everything on it but would like to remove my documents just for absolute peace of mind.
If it is not practical to cut and paste my documents then put it back then I will not bother,I do have spare HDDs etc but it is not that important.
All I really want to know is the cut and paste and return later an option ?

760250 2009-03-28 22:19:00 Since he's a computer expert, simply cutting and pasting may not be feasable. I mentioned shredding before - try www.fileshredder.org :) pcuser42 (130)
760251 2009-03-28 22:26:00 It'll be fine. But bear in mind history from programs and settings etc will be easily accessable.

You can try use Eraser to clear the "cutted" space as IIRC the PC just sees it as free space, but its still there, and can be recovered with data recovery programs

And you could just encrypt the My Documents folder if you wanted. Alond with your Documents and Settings folder with your user profiles

760254 2009-03-29 03:01:00 So like I said. Get another drive. Thats the most secure thing you can do. pctek (84)
