582631 2007-08-19 00:44:00 Does anybody know if you can get a Component to S-video converter, for say $50 or less? This could be an RCA (plug or socket) to S-Video (plug or socket or SCART plug).

The reason I want this is for an Altech MG25P media player that outputs composite or component, but not S-video. My Grundig TV only has S-video, and can take RCA plugs or SCART. I'm OK with the composite signal, but really notice the dot crawl sometimes so am keen to see if there is a cheapish option to upgrade the signal to S-video.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

By the way, if you are interested in learning more about component or S-video or SCART etc. I found this handy page which brielfy explans all the terms.

582632 2007-08-19 01:48:00 S-Video comprises of two video channels Y= Luminance pin 3 and C=Chrominance pin 4, pins 1&2 are both ground. As for component the Chrominance is sent as two channels, pB and pR. Now if you want to experiment you could try mixing the two Chrominance channels. Anyone else tried this?
Disclaimer; I have not tried this but at this point I can't see why it would not work.
Zaphod, I would wait for more replies before you attempt this.

It's a bit more complicated than that, because the chrominance part of an S-video signal is a 4.43Mhz (PAL) modulated carrier. There would be some electronic circuitry necessarily involved in the conversion box.

582635 2007-08-20 00:34:00 S video is still pretty clear even though hdmi is here.

Here is what im doing with my set up

Im running an s video lead from the back of my telstra decoder and it plugs into the back of the dvd recorder and then i have a HDMI cable plugged in from the recorder to the HDMI socket in the tv and the result is a bloody clear picture despite the fact the telstra box doesnt have component out.

582636 2007-08-20 01:09:00 Thanks for the replies. It sounds like there is no cheap answer.

Hitech's response got me thinking that this could be done if I plug component into the IN connection of a DVD or Amplifier etc., and then use the S-Video OUT of that.

I dont think I have anything that takes Component input, but will check my DVD and MySky boxes.

Answer will probably be that I will need to return the MG25P and get something else which does have S-Video out. (I havent had it long and it was advertised with S-Video out. That is the MG25 not the MG25P which was supplied).

Because my tv has a lot of inputs im also using the same s video lead from the telstra decoder to the dvd s video input but i also have component leads plugged in from the dvd recorder as well which are plugged into the component input of the tv.

582638 2007-08-20 02:30:00 I'm not sure if this is what you need but check out the Canopus ADVC range of converters. They handle both VHS and S-VHS. I have an ADVC-100 that has performed flawlessly for years with no dropped frames. The NZ agents are www.imagingtechnology.co.nz braindead (1685)
582639 2007-08-20 09:41:00 So what method are you going to use for your tv. Hitech (9024)
582640 2007-08-20 10:36:00 I dont have any devices which take component input, so thats not an option.

The Canopus stuff looks like it would work, but is well above the $50 price range (If I need to spend more than that I would get a different media player which costs $50 more but has S-video)

I found this "InFocus Component Video to S-Video Adapter (www.ascent.co.nz)" on Ascent and am considering giving it a go, but from what has been said it may not do a very good job.
