2007-08-15 08:57:00 | Hi all, I own a 50cc scooter . I've recently had a few problems with it, so I'll list what's happened in case anyone can identify where something may have gone wrong . It's a Chinese model, chain driven with a 2 stroke engine . I recently replaced the clutch hub which had completely sheared in half . In the process, I had to remove the exhaust, and damaged the exhaust gasket . I didn't bother putting a new one on, so it was popping heaps through the seal . It started having power issues a couple of days later, and wouldn't really go properly . The engine loses all power when I try and accelerate . I put a new gasket on, and it sounds better, but the problem was still present . So I pulled the carburator off and cleaned that out, there was heaps of sandy stuff and some water in the fuel bowl, so I figured a jet would have been blocked or something, but cleaning this was to no avail . So my question is, what could be causing this? It sounds like it's being choked once you give it a certain amount of throttle . I'm at a complete loss . TIA .

If it is chinese made, it probably isn't made to last, and you may not be able to get replacement parts for it . I am now trying to avoid anything made in china, apart from things with very low value . |

2007-08-15 10:01:00 | I managed to get a clutch hub for it fairly easily, so that was good. But whatever is currently wrong with it has seriously got me stumped. | roddy_boy (4115) | |
2007-08-15 10:29:00 | 2 strokes 1st thing try new spark plug gapped to specs Fuel getting to carb remove hose turn on tap, remove carb blow thru jets and passages check compression take out plug put thumb over hole kick over should blow thumb out. Try without airfilter Check exhaust system esp baffles not blocked with oil and carbon Kick over with plug out and earthed should be blue and constant Failing that use plan B which is take gas from fuel tank and pour over machine and light with match yelling burn you communist heap of junk. (this makes you feel better.) tedheath

2007-08-15 10:35:00 | Thanks for the reply, 2 strokes 1st thing try new spark plug gapped to specs I put a new spark plug in not that long ago, but what do you mean by "gapped to specs"? Fuel getting to carb remove hose turn on tap, remove carb blow thru jets and passages Yeah I gave the carby a good clean out . check compression take out plug put thumb over hole kick over should blow thumb out . Will try this . Try without airfilter Have done so Check exhaust system esp baffles not blocked with oil and carbon Yeah gave the inside a good scraping to check for blockages . Kick over with plug out and earthed should be blue and constant Spark is fine . Failing that use plan B which is take gas from fuel tank and pour over machine and light with match yelling burn you communist heap of junk . (this makes you feel better . ) lol I'm very nearly at that stage :P

2007-08-15 11:04:00 | Most 2 stroke problems are caused by spark plug. Get another brand new NGK plug 'number as specified in handbook or sticker under seat. Gap is the air distance the spark jumps from the electrode to the body. Buy a set of feeler gauges to set distance there may be gauge in toolbox. If its out, say too big tap it on a bit of wood to decrease if its too small open up by putting in a feeler gauge and tilting it. Then tap down to size. Rough check of float level drain bowl, fit bowl, turn on tap, remove bowl gas shouldnt be right at the top or overflowing and shouldnt be too low. Check needle hanging from slide is positively located by clip. I few microlight with 2 stroke from akl to nelson a few times so I was cautious in making it run sweet. My neigbours got one of these communist chinese scooters it cost him bugger all, looks **** hot and goes well. tedheath

2007-08-15 11:17:00 | Another thing to check are the reed valves behind the carby if it has them some have rotary valves. Reed valves can get stuck open with a bit of carbon or just get tired and not seat. Next thing to check will be ignition timing. When using kick starter does the compression feel same as before If its still toast it may pay to pull motor apart and change crankshaft seals

2007-08-15 18:44:00 | This is also another consideration . 2-strokes are very sensitive about fuel:air mixtures, and running an open exhaust system effectively leans out the mixture . . sometimes to damaging proportions . If you have overheated the little guy with a lean mixture from the exhaust leak, then you might be looking at a new piston/rings and maybe a rebore of the cylinder . . . . if that's even possible . We call these Chinese engines "Dixie Cups" ie, they don't get repaired, they get thrown away .

2007-08-15 21:00:00 | Im with surfer, the lack of a gasket may have damaged the rings do a compression test. take out the plug put a compression guage in there and turn over check against factory specs to see want it should be. There is a motorcycle forum on the kiwi biker (google) site that may help but you may get some ribbing about the bike (they are pretty straight shooters there.)

2007-08-15 22:00:00 | Yes I was waiting for someone else to say that he has probibly cooked the motor as two stroke air cooled motors are sensitive to heat. Back in 1973 I had a Kawasaki 350cc Big Horn trail bike wjth a two stroke motor. It had 2 carburator jets one you put in if you were doing trail work and one if you were useing it on the road. I basicly used it for going to work on a trip of about 5km. After about 6 months I sold it. Later on I found out that who I had sold it to went on a 100km trip and blew the motor by melting hole through the top of the piston. It turned out they had the wrong jet in it. Trevor :)
