582330 2007-08-23 10:29:00 Erm, does downloading Xtra email from Oz count as international bandwidth?

That could wreak havoc on some people.

582331 2007-08-23 11:17:00 A neighbour left me a note asking that I come and sort out their email tomorrow. They can now receive email, but not send. I replied:

"You have not really got e-mail, you have got Yahoo - Xtra. Do you recall the fable about the Emperor's new Clothes?
As long as you have Xtra, you will have to rely on luck. Unfortunately, it is going to be bad luck. that is part of the deal with Xtra.
Tomorrow (Friday) it is not terribly likely I will be free,
(1) because I will most likely have to buzz off for a fair piece of the day. (A prior commitment.)
(2) because I might get lucky and die before I have to deal with that Xtra xcre----
I will spend the night praying that I get struck by lightning. Of course, I will go straight to hell for a prayer like that. There will be a lot of Xtra there, so I want to avoid it while I am here."

I would sooner lick cactus.

582333 2007-08-25 00:46:00 Hi all.
Not sure if this has already been posted or not .. but here goes.
I made the mistake of downloading the Xtra Yahoo Bubble etc, etc. Thought that I wouldn't be able to clear my emails from my Outlook Express unless I 'changed over'. Emails were 'lost', reaching me 8 hours after being sent ... etc. Just a nightmare. Anyway ... looked all over xtra yahoo site to DELETE my account with them - as I HATE IT!! No joy!
Have just got off telephone with Telecom guy - am so happy ... I could seriously think about marrying him.
These are the settings he gave me - so that my xtra account will bypass yahoo xtra and go straight into my Outlook Express account (like before).

1) Open Outlook Express.
2) Go to Outbox (make sure you don't have anything in there)
3) Tools, Accounts, Mail, click on pop3.xtra.co.nz account
Properties, General - check your xtra email address is there.
Tick bottom box (include this account ....)
Servers - incoming mail = pop3.xtra.co.nz
outgoing (smtp) CHANGE to send.xtra.co.nz
Account Name - start of your xtra email address
Tick remember password
Tick Outgoing mail server requires auth ....
Click settings box - make sure top box is checked
Go to advanced:
Outgoing - change to 465
Tick this server requires a secure etc
Incoming - should be 995
Tick this server requires a secure etc
AND VOILA - your emails are not routed through to Yahoo Xtra - but straight into your Outlook Express
EMAILS COMING THROUGH IMMEDIATELY!
I dont have to use Yahoo Webmail to clear them now - so wont be going back!
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Cherie.

582334 2007-08-25 01:58:00 Interestingly, I finally managed to sign in.

Had a wee play ('cos that's what I do for a living with software) and started to add a new account 'just to see', but pressed the <Cancel> button before I even got past the Account Name (1st) step.

Then a few minutes later I got an email (image here (www.imagef1.net.nz)) requesting confirmation of details. You will note the highlighted items on the image: no listed email address to verify, no URL to copy/paste into the browser and no verification code (I have pixellated my email address to protect the 'innocent' :D).

So, looks like some clumsy coding that doesn't recognise a <Cancel> action and sends a confirmation message anyway... :badpc:

Is this the level of quality we should expect from YahooXtra??? Should I be surprised? :groan:

582335 2007-08-25 02:05:00 Wooohooo...

They are just saving you the trouble of all that typing!

Of course you now only need to worry about the last sentence of this :D

"When you register with Yahoo!7, we ask for your name, email address, birth date, gender, post code, occupation, industry, and personal interests. Once you register with Yahoo!7 and sign in to our services, you are not anonymous to us."

582336 2007-08-25 02:22:00 But from the looks of the email I have a 110% spam proof, totally anonymous (invisible??) email address now!! :D I just need to find out how I can confirm it. :D :D johcar (6283)

You will be able to access it using the password that you didn't put in :p

Yahoo now know everything about you (including your inside leg measurement I presume), so if all else fails just ask them to sort it

.
This works for some people .
The old settings work for some others .
A combination of both the old and the new work for yet other people .

There is no one fix, and no consistency . I am so sick of doing this I am insisting people change providers . Several have agreed .

582339 2007-08-25 11:51:00 This new service seems so draconian. There now seems NO WAY for me to access my Xtra mail via webmail, unless I agree to Yahoo's terms and conditions, WHICH I DON'T!! And why don't I... because they collect huge amounts of personalised information about me, and clearly state in their T&C that there are plenty of circumstances when this information can be passed on to third parties, eg to help provide me with a service. All I want to do is access my Xtra webmail, without having my privacy invaded in a wholesale manner. For years I have stuck with Xtra as my ISP, but finally I am seriously considering other options. Why should I be FORCED to sign up with Yahoo! Nothing personal, but shouldn't this be my choice. doctor90210 (12685)
