Could someone not get a proper PC with good software for NZ$10000+? $600 for a 750GB HDD? What are they, made out of pure rubidium and encased in aerogel? Damn, I'd get so get a PC and 3-4 huge LCD's for that price.

Ahem, I never said sub 5K. And btw, why are the HDD's so expensive? Glossing over that are we or can anyone change the HDD's in a Mac now with any generic type?

You would have to ask Apple NZ about their pricing because if you look at the US pricing of the MacPro it starts at $2499 US (the exchange rate is a wee bit volatile at the mo)

You would have to ask Apple US about their HD pricing, although you can actually put your preferred choice of HD in if you want to except that you would have to buy the MacPro with HD - not sure whether that would be worth it $$ You would have to check the EULA to see if changing the HD voids Apple's warranty but if your ok with that then go for it.

Apple is mostly known for charging excessively for the RAM which they get from 3rd party suppliers at a very competitive rate.

The components are probably priced they way they are to make a healthy profit since Apple is a business not a charity.

Generally people who buy MacPros don't usually complain about the cost of the components in the same way that people who buy certain brands of cars don't tend to complain about the cost of the tyres even though at the end of the day a Toyota will still get you from Auckland to Taupo as much as an Audi will.
(given the choice Id take the Audi)

Any harddive will go in, it will not void warrenty. Nobody I know have brought ram from apple, although there prices have come down over the past year for ram, still a lot cheaper going somewhere else.
I would rather drive the toyota

I drove an Audi A8 from Ohakune to Auckland after a ski trip with my sister and a friend of hers who owned the Audi, I'd take that over a Toymota any day.

I read this review of Final Cut Studio 2 from the Australian PC Authority Magazine last month, I didn't keep the link so I had to hunt for it.

"Final Cut Pro (FCP) itself is mostly unchanged in appearance, however it's equipped with a new post production codec named Pro Res 4:2:2. It's a lossless, variable bitrate codec that can compress 10-bit 1080p footage into 220Mb/s, or 145Mb/s at 8-bit. Another interesting addition is that when you start a new project its settings will automatically conform to the first clip you drag into the timeline, with other format clips automatically scaling to the same resolution as the first clip. Adjustments can be made from the clip's individual motion tab.

This one in particular was 2nd hand for about 82k. I'm not sure what a new A8 goes for. If I was in that league i would gladly have one. :)
