581790 2007-08-17 04:18:00 My wife learned a valuable lessons from just such an encounter last winter here in SoCal .

A homeless couple, standing near one of our large supermarkets (foods) and holding a small baby and another urchin next to them was panhandling for money .

They had a hand-scrawled cardboard sign that read: "We need $$ for food and Pampers for our kids" . (Pampers® are paper product diapers/nappies)

My wife felt compassion for them and when she came back out they were still begging . . . looking very hungry and dirty .

She offered them some bread, canned soups, canned formula and some bottles for the baby, a half dozen deli-made sandwiches and fresh fruit and some individual containers of milk and fruit juices . She bought toothpaste, toothbrushes and some bar soaps and deodorant and disposable razors for the adults .

They looked at her and said: "What're we supposed to do with this cr##? We don't need this junk, we need money!"

She put the food back into her shopping cart and continued to the car .

We also get so-called crippled veterans standing on the freeway offramps with the same type of signs saying: "Disabled US VET, needs money . . ANYTHING!"

One of them was found to drive away in his new Nissan Pathfinder SUV after taking in over $300 . 00US in just four hours . He makes a good living playing on the collective consciences of people who think he's for real .

She now turns a blind eye to these phoney beggars who want the things they need to feed their bad habits . . . . and not food .

It sounds like you are in the USA . I hope we don't get like that here in NZ, but I can slowly see happening .

581791 2007-08-17 04:20:00 Interesting perspective.

He also may think it is a bit patronising. People do have pride, and many people will not take handouts, no matter how desperate for cash they are.

581792 2007-08-17 06:06:00 I would like to do something. He does use the Internet. Get him to become a PressF1 member then he could PM his bank account number. Sweep (90)

Cheers :)

581794 2007-08-17 08:27:00 He could have something like myalgic encephalitis (not sure about the spelling)... there are a few things around that will happily eat holes in a heart, usually the damage is done by the time it is diagnosed. Shortcircuit (1666)

Yeah, that's disgusting. It's hard enough for genuine poor people to get money without these crooks deceiving us.
But it is the norm back in Indonesia - motorways are crowded by supposedly deformed men and women, sometimes children. Rumors has it that desperate parents chopped off their own children's limbs so people will sympathise them and donate money/food.

It already does happen. Usually for booze or drugs.

581797 2007-08-17 10:55:00 How much does he need to replace his wallet?

Or your seeking to pay his medical bills as well?, Did he ask for help?, Is the hospital asking him for money he doesn't have to provide his treatment?

Or is it all about a little treat because he got exposure?

581799 2007-08-17 12:46:00 i'm with the "i already paid him in my taxes" camp; we already pay for him to live, and we also pay the police who should be cracking down on this sort of thing but they cant due to the shocking state of our teenage population (having finished 7th form last year i can tell you it's pretty bad)

now i know he needs/wants it, but it's not like i myself have money to give away.

and to the comment about donating to greenpeace: WHY? they are 2nd only to PETA ***!
