760636 2009-03-30 03:52:00 What did you type in??

If the laptop (obviously the desktop is on the net)? can get on the net, I could check it from here with teamviewer if you want

760637 2009-03-30 04:00:00 I've also tried browsing for the printer, and still can't see itThe Laptop may have to be in the same workgroup to see the shared printer - thats one possible reason.

Any other suggestions to try? Grab the IT people by the --- you know what and in a claim polite voice - unlock the damn thing :p

760638 2009-03-30 04:14:00 Thanks for the suggestions.

Speedy - I typed in \\tony.\Printer3

Would the . after tony somehow affect it? That is the exact spelling and punctuation of the full computer name under system properties.

Thanks for the offer of checking with Teamviewer, but I won't be able to install Team Viewer onto it because of the restrictions in place on it - thanks anyway.

WT - When I right-click on 'My Computer' on the laptop, and look at Computer name, it doesn't show a workgroup - just a domain. If I change the home PC workgroup name to be the same as the laptop domain, would that matter or are they two seperate things?

Maybe I just need to admit defeat on this one???

PS - no chance of IT budging... I wasn't even allowed to put a newer version of Java on the damn thing a few weeks ago because it hadn't been tested for compatibility with with systems yet!

760639 2009-03-30 04:20:00 Yup remove the . Speedy Gonzales (78)
760640 2009-03-30 04:30:00 Well, I've made some progress but no resolution.
Tried it without the . and still the same message.
So, I disconnected from the work VPN but still left it connected to internet. Tried again.
After a few minutes, it came up with the message 'A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue. Please contact your system administrator.'

Now, I'm assuming this must be a restriction on the laptop, rather than a setting on the desktop?
If it's a restriction on the laptop then I guess nothing more can be done...?

760641 2009-03-30 04:32:00 Yup looks like that message killed that idea  Speedy Gonzales (78)
760642 2009-03-30 04:36:00 Oh well. It was worth a try.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions of help though, I appreciate it :)

760643 2009-03-30 05:10:00 WT - When I right-click on 'My Computer' on the laptop, and look at Computer name, it doesn't show a workgroup - just a domain. If I change the home PC workgroup name to be the same as the laptop domain, would that matter or are they two seperate things?
Highly doubt it - when you connect to a domain - like at work, you would be connecting to a server someplace.

Found the below as a example of the two - Domains and workgroups.( better than I could explain)

Domains:
Advantages
1. One location for all user accounts, groups and computers, passwords are same for all computers.
2. Easier and quicker to maintain
3. Scales easier if you add more users and computers

Disadvantages
1. Requires a windows server
2. Complex to set up

Workgroups:
Advantages
1. Useful for small networks (10 or less computers)
2. Very easy to setup
3. No additional knowledge required
4. No server required.

Disadvantages
1. Need to setup account and password on each and every machine.
2. Passwords can become out of sync, if changed on one computer and not others
3. No easily scalable. If using more than 10 computers, the number of accounts to set up increases a lot more
4. More time required to setup for new users!
5. If using file sharing, you may reach the 10 max simultaneous connections limit

While I know why the IT people are blocking installing anything, basically security - Them adding a printer from home seems a little excessive - esp if you are doing work from home.

Edited: I was trying to see if This here (www.printershare.com) would run off a USB drive - but it doesn't - I use it myself, and I can take my laptop any where and print off anything and it will print at home. (it doesn't need to install any print drivers)
