I rang T..comand it sounds like they don't have a VOIP capable mode/router. At the moment I have the T..com Seedtouch 585 and can not see any voip possibility? Do you know which one of theirs that may do the job for voip?
Thanks
NT

760349 2009-03-29 20:45:00 Thanks, Chill, for your enlightening replies to NT. I have tucked this away for future reference.

NT, the modems don't provide voip per se. The HT-486 ATA does that. It connects to the switch on the modem/router. Chill just said that the newer modems were more reliable for all traffic, including the voice packets.

Ok, that would mean, I either need two adapters(as the two phones are in separate areas) or one adapter and one voip capable router/modem. Is tat right?

760351 2009-03-30 03:44:00 One newer modem/router and one HT-486 ATA.

Plug the ATA into the router switch and the phone into the ATA and also attach the ATA to a PSTN socket.

Go here for the manual for the HT-486 www.grandstream.com

Most routers will do VOIP, it just depends on how much playing around you wont to do. If you setup required port forwards you can generally get one VOIP adapter to work OK.

More modern VOIP devices support STUN, which is supposed to allow a VOIP device to work without any pot forwards, but it is hit and miss at best. It does have a better chance of getting a connection working then most other methods and does not require any changes made to the router.

Many modern routers now try to be clever and attempt to assist the VOIP traffic by "altering" the traffic as it passes through the router. This ends up causing more problems then it is worth, particularly if other methods, such as STUN are being used.

The other problem many routers have is with the streaming UPD traffic for the voice channel. Generally if you have no problems with torrents then you should be OK.

The picture you posted will work OK, providing you keep the telecom landline.
I assume you are still wonting to use the ATA? as your picture did not show it connected. You could of cause purchase an all in one VOIP, router, ADSL & wireless device which would take care of most of the hard work for you. The Linksys WAG54GPv2 comes to mind.

Any further questions feel free to ask.

760354 2009-03-30 05:58:00 Hi notechyet,

Basically, that picture was correct, except the ATA Adapter goes into the back of your ADSL Router in the same way that your computer does.

The modem isnt VoIP-specific, it just works much better than your existing one. Ring them and tell them the Speedtouch is not reliable enough for VoIP and they should give you the new one you see on the TV Ads.

Long story short:
Buy the HT-486 and get 2talk to change your secondary number to over to them.
In doing so, if you dont change your Router, you'll likely find it will disconnect semi-frequently, calls will drop out, and it will be generally unreliable. This is why I recommend you get Telecom to send you the new one (Free).

Thanks for all your support!
Very much appreciated. I'll post to let know when/how it is working.
