Greg, how about I hold onto my coin and get a blunt, rusty blade instead?

Will that do?Not sure what you mean by that. But good on ya for volunteering to part with a few coins in the event that he doesn't get enough support from our social services.

581782 2007-08-17 00:59:00 I've donated every two weeks for the last 24 years.

It's called Income Tax.

I'm sure if he goes to WINZ or something similar, he'll be more than compensated for his loss.

And yes, I empathise with the guy, there are some real ****heads out there, but there may be better avenues for him.

I think there are going to be a lot more of these stories future. There was also one my local paper, who was the parent of an old school friend, who couldn't afford to pay for their electricity, and had to go to the library to keep warm. The rich in NZ are getting richer, and the poorer are getting poorer. Look at the people on the rich list, ther are now so many that they have doubled the qualifying amount to 50 million. All those people could afford to give back to the down and outers in the community. I say share the wealth. Personally I don't mind paying more in tax, to pick up the less fortionate as I believe in the state providing for all people in need. Unfortionately there are a lot of people who do abuse the system, and always have their hand out to get as much out of the government as they can, which ruins it for the geunine people in need. I do fear that with the new National government coming in at th next election, their will be cuts to the state funding.

581783 2007-08-17 01:45:00 I think there are going to be a lot more of these stories future.Let's keep things in perspective. There's only so much that we as Joe Public can do. But meantime we can give a bit of assistance for our neighbour. This guy could've been a fellow PressF1er after all.

C'mon people, a cup of coffee or a hamburger would cost more than what I'm asking you to donate.

Two bucks, three bucks? This guy has a medical death sentence. Let's help ease his pain during whatever few years he has left.

It is interesting that you made your post a poll, where users can see what other users voted. I think because of this people haven't voted. Personally if I saw him in the street I would invite him for a meal and give him some money if he needs it, but I think he needs more people support, than just throwing money at him.

581785 2007-08-17 01:57:00 From the sound of it, throw money at him and there will be ratbags in Shannon that will take it. The locals probably know who they are. PaulD (232)

581787 2007-08-17 02:49:00 Oh man, I expected more than just me and the other guy to say no. Better to be honest that not vote at all though, right? Hmm?

Although I do feel sorry for the guy, I can't do much to help him right now.

Nah, Greg wouldn't do that- I'd kick his butt :D

Much better to be honest and say you can't do much to help right now than bleat about tax dollars already going to a good cause.

Good on you for being honest WF

581789 2007-08-17 03:58:00 My wife learned a valuable lessons from just such an encounter last winter here in SoCal .

A homeless couple, standing near one of our large supermarkets (foods) and holding a small baby and another urchin next to them was panhandling for money .

They had a hand-scrawled cardboard sign that read: "We need $$ for food and Pampers for our kids" . (Pampers® are paper product diapers/nappies)

My wife felt compassion for them and when she came back out they were still begging . . . looking very hungry and dirty .

She offered them some bread, canned soups, canned formula and some bottles for the baby, a half dozen deli-made sandwiches and fresh fruit and some individual containers of milk and fruit juices . She bought toothpaste, toothbrushes and some bar soaps and deodorant and disposable razors for the adults .

They looked at her and said: "What're we supposed to do with this cr##? We don't need this junk, we need money!"

She put the food back into her shopping cart and continued to the car .

We also get so-called crippled veterans standing on the freeway offramps with the same type of signs saying: "Disabled US VET, needs money . . ANYTHING!"

One of them was found to drive away in his new Nissan Pathfinder SUV after taking in over $300 . 00US in just four hours . He makes a good living playing on the collective consciences of people who think he's for real .

She now turns a blind eye to these phoney beggars who want the things they need to feed their bad habits . . . . and not food .
