| 760679 | 2009-03-30 02:36:00 | Basically, the other day I did a big-ish cleanup of my laptop. Mostly used TuneUp Utilities 2008 for everything, but also used CCleaner as well. Pretty much did a defrag, registry clean, cookie cleaning, error checking all that stuff. Then after a reboot (or two) anything in Firefox (just got the latest update a couple mins ago, no diff) would take forever to load. Google took around 40 odd seconds and a search took around 20 - 30 (instead of about 1). I've tried rebooting my modem and all that (don't have another computer here to try it on tho) HOWEVER I tried IE and it seems to be fine. I never used IE so I don't know how fast it is, it is not as fast as Firefox was for me a few days ago however it is a HELL of a lot quicker than FF atm. Everything in IE seems to load fine. Right now (and this morning + last night + day before) it has been slower than dial up (am with Xnet for broadband) and sometimes pages will require multiple refreshes to even load. And getting any videos to buffer is near impossible (let alone the thumbnail) But anyway, did a virus scan (Kaspersky and Spyware Terminator) and they didn't find much, but removed what they did, did another defrag and registry clean (yesterday) but still no difference. Download speeds are crap (6.5KB/sec atm) and have also tried disabling all (only have 2) add ons in FF. No Diff. Also, deleted any old restore points (before I realized there was a prob) so that's out of the question I think. So in short, am on XP, have the latest version of Firefox and any web browsing is pretty much impossible right now. Will try a HijackThis log maybe? Any help? | 760680 | 2009-03-30 02:41:00 | Be careful what registry cleaning program you use. Some can remove valid entries from programs and probably windows. And can screw a system up, if you delete the wrong entries |

| 760681 | 2009-03-30 02:46:00 | Yea I've heard that. Have, however, used the same one before (TuneUp Utilities 08) in the past with no probs. Will stay well clear of them now. | --Wolf-- (128) | ||

Who would be spend 20$ on a 1.53MB software? Why not just kill your computer from Limewire? "Buy real memory with $20." by Sin Jeong-hun on June 25, 2008 Cons: Since Windows 95, I've used this kind of software. It certainly shows increased free ram on the resource monitor (taskman) but that's all. Your programs start scratching HDD, cause it causes more memory hard faults (which means that they have to load from page file on HDD). Just buy a 1GB ram module with $20. | 760688 | 2009-03-30 07:02:00 | Tried all of the suggestions here (except downloading and installing over the top) Initially, I thought opening FF in safe mode fixed it. Everything was extremely fast. But then I did a few timed tests and realized it hadn't actually solved anything. HOWEVER, I have decided that no extensions (download manager bar + xnet usage meter) are the cause, and that the plugins seem okay, EXCEPT for POSSIBLY a Acrobat PDF plugin and Quicktime plugin. I did some tests in FF loading google.co.nz (it's an iGoogle so it has some other stuff to load, not much though). To fully load (green bar all the way to the end) took these times Normal (nothing disabled): 33 sec Safe Mode: 32 sec No Extensions: 32 sec No Quicktime Plugin: 33 sec No Acrobat Plugin: 30 sec I only did these once but I'm not sure if any of that is actually the problem. It's still piss slow. To fully load Google used to take me a couple of seconds. So now what are my options? Whatever I do I don't really want to lose my bookmarks (have quite a few), so how do I delete my profile (will it delete the bookmarks?), I don't mind loosing any plugins or add ons. Is my only other option to remove FF completely (again, will this lose my bookmarks?) and download and reinstall? Have spent the last hour trying to get it back to full speed but to no avail. I can't even get videos to load (haven't waited more than a few mins tho, but never used to take anywhere near that long) |
