| 760210 | 2009-03-28 12:24:00 | My daughter's laptop has failed and won't boot into Windows. Looks like this but case is white: www.trustedreviews.com Running Vista Home, fairly certain. Can get into bios and change things, tried running Damn Small Linux from dvd drive, which it did but spent ages analyzing USB ports and in the end came to a halt. Tried ALT F10 for System Restore but can't find O/S and wants to load drivers, pointing at System32, can't seem to make it do anything intelligent. At some point it gave this error message: STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The verification of a KnownDLL failed. system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000020 (0x89b4f008 0x00000000). The system has been shut down. Google seems to find nothing, can anyone offer any advice? |

| 760211 | 2009-03-28 12:37:00 | Just got this error message: System Recovery Options RecEnv.exe - Application Error The instruction at 0x756f340d referenced memory at 0x756f340d. The required memory was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc0000185. Apparently when the Laptop failed for the first time it was running ok then began scrolling lots of numbers down the screen a bit like the Matrix, my daughter's other half reckons it is a virus. |

| 760213 | 2009-03-28 19:25:00 | Nope don't have that disk, on dial up so 320Meg too big to d/l on spur of the moment. Does Dick Smith sell it? Damn Small Linux did not seem to work correctly in fact all operations on the computer that are possible seem to proceed much slower than I would expect with a machine that has these specs. |

| 760214 | 2009-03-28 19:27:00 | DSE don't sell it, unfortunatly. You have to make it yourself from a Windows XP CD. Have you tried reinstalling? It's also possible that a partition is corrupt. |

| 760215 | 2009-03-28 19:40:00 | Have you tried putting the laptop drive into your computer as a secondary drive? To scan it or see if it will actually allow you to read from it. You should be able to get the notebook to IDE adapters (www.dse.co.nz) at DSE I also wonder if running something like Puppy or Damn Small Linux from a USB drive might work I wouldn't bother with a reinstall, especially if there is non-backed up data |

| 760216 | 2009-03-28 20:06:00 | Have tried all options offered, System Restore, System Repair, Last Known Good, command line, restrui, all end in black screen/no activity or the error messages I have posted above. Suppose I could slave HDD to my computer but if it has virus I don't want it on my computer, think my daughter can take it to experts for repair. Yes according to my daughter there is important none-backed up data including pictures from camera which cannot be replicated, great, last Xmas when she got the laptop I told her to back up often but she said to me that she is so busy with her training course that she doesn't have the time. |

| 760218 | 2009-03-28 20:14:00 | Yes none of this would be a problem if it was my own computer but this is a user who is quite computer literate in the sense that she has been using them since being a teenager but all the usual consumer options for restore don't work. I think the HDD is faulty. |

| 760219 | 2009-03-28 22:39:00 | Highly likely a hardware problem, but see if this works: Download the Vista Recovery CD from here (neosmart.net) using any Torrent client. Once done, burn to a CD and boot from it using the faulty laptop. Follow the instructions here (www.bleepingcomputer.com) to perform a startup repair If that doesn't work at the VRC options screen select "Command Prompt" and perform a chkdsk /r /f |
