760196 2009-03-28 11:22:00 My TV has a DVI-I port( as well as SCART etc) and several S/PDIF digital audio ports.
I want to transfer data, ie music, photos and possibly videos from my PC running XP sp3 & Media Player to the TV using my wired home network. This already works with my son's Xbox hut the Xbox is very noisy and not ideal.
I am thinking of using an HP Pavilion DV5-1111ax laptop to connect from the network to the TV. This laptop has an ATI Radeon HD3450 512Mb dedicated graphics card, HDMI port and BlueRay player and will have other uses as well.
I already have an HD Mysky decoder connected to the TV and use an HDMI to DVI cable and separate digital audio coax cable as the TV DVI port does not transfer audio but is otherwise compatible with HDMI.
To connect the laptop to the TV I will have to use an HDMI switch for the Mysky and laptop outputs.
My problem is in getting digital audio sound from the laptop to the TV as the laptop does not have a S/PDIF port. I suspect that I may have to connect an external sound card with an S/PDIF port via a USB port. Will this work with the dedicated graphics in the laptop?? I have been unable to determine this as I do not yet have the laptop and it is too complex a matter for the normal sales assistant.

760197 2009-03-28 22:29:00 Does it have to be digital audio?

As you could use a 3.5mm jack to RCA cable

760198 2009-03-28 22:34:00 Well there's not much you can do (besides use 3.5mm to RCA cables), if the TV doesnt have HDMI on it

The laptop doesnt have SPDIF on it, because I think the HDMI carries video and sound

I would prefer digital sound as the TV has 5.1 surround sound if I add the speakers.
My main concern is whether digital audio will be available via a usb port of the laptop as well as via the HDMI port. I can get an external sound card with a SPDIF output which connects to the usb port.

760200 2009-03-29 00:43:00 Well use 3.5 mm to rca like we said. Then you should get 5:1 Speedy Gonzales (78)
760201 2009-03-29 21:15:00 Doesn't digital audio come off the 3.5mm headphone jack? My brother's HP laptop has a setting which turns the headphone jack into an SPDIF output. Then you use a 3.5mm->RCA cable and plug it into the coax SPDIF input of your speakers/amp etc. utopian201 (6245)
