| 581430 | 2007-08-15 19:33:00 | Would it work? OK for NZ? Sounds like a good idea: give families and libraries a filter to stop porn and terrorist sites. But see the comments below the article (some included here) at: www.australianit.news.com.au "...$189 million on "cleaning up the internet" for Australian families, blocking pornography, upgrading the search for chat-room sex predators and cutting off terror sites. Every Australian family will be provided with a free internet filter and the federal Government will enter an unprecedented partnership with service providers to filter pornography at the source. Communications and Australian Federal Police resources will be boosted immediately to expand checks on internet chat rooms to detect child predators, and privacy laws masking sex offenders on the net will be altered." Some of the comments on the article: ...porn is the least of the dangers online. Interesting note, that many online filtering stops other non-p0rn, but "dangerous" sites such as breast feeding information, breast cancer support groups... ...nothing but a con job. You can filter sites now, without any "special" filtering software if you just bother to find out how. It ain't difficult and you don't have to be an "IT expert" to do it. Howard's way will also filter out legitimate, educational type sites - not just porn. |

I wonder how many people actually knew about it, let alone used it |

Maybe that's the point, filter out more than porn sites... But if it did the job properly (which would be difficult), what's the problem? |
