761910 2009-04-03 03:30:00 I have a couple of problems with setting up a new laptop.
1. Unaccountably, I have typewriter sounds (complete with bell at the end of the line!) when using the keyboard. Very nostalgic, but really annoying. Any ideas for getting rid of this?

2. On another computer I have the facility to type french accents (acute, grave, cedilla etc) by hitting the appropriate sign followed immediately by the letter required (i.e. "`" then "e" gives "è"). I have no idea how I set this up some years ago but would like to do it again. Can anyone help please? (googling hasn't)

761911 2009-04-03 03:35:00 No. 2. What language setting have you set it as for the default?
"Regional and Language Options"

No. 1. Keyboard does not normally have any sounds apart from just the normal key presses. Check you don't have some Theme set that is causing it.

761915 2009-04-03 05:04:00 You'll need to set the language to international for that to work.
Follow the instructions here on how to add a language:

2. If in Classic View, click Control Panel Home in upper-left corner
3. Under Clock, Language, and Region, click Change keyboards or other input methods
4. Click Change keyboards
5. Click Add
6. Scroll down to the layout you want to add*
7. If you don't see a list including the keyboard you want, click + to expand
8. Choose your layout
9. Click OK in each dialog window.

Windows XP

1. Open your Control Panel (via Start menu or My Computer)
2. Double-click Regional and Language Options
3. Click Languages
4. Click Details
5. Click Add
6. Under "Input Language" pick the language you want to add*
7. Under "Keyboard layout/IME" make your selection
8. Click OK in each dialog window.

761916 2009-04-03 06:44:00 as for the typewritter sounds check your startup for anything unusual or find the files it uses to make the sound and delete them or edit them to make almost zero sound eg a 0 byte wave file with the name of the wave files or a valid wave file with minimal sound williamF (115)
761917 2009-04-03 06:58:00 Sounds like ( no Pun intended) someone has added in a sound effect / prank - something like These (www.colorpilot.com) - didn't start on 1st April did it ??

Edited: look and see if This program (www.batchconverter.com) is in the programs and features.
Have a look in the Icon Tray by the clock, hold the cursor over the icons and see what each one says it is ( some will be obvious) - see if there is any Icon that it could be ( its name) - then go into Control Panel / programs and features and remove the program.

Merci mille fois à tous.
I'm still struggling with the typewriter sounds - maybe earmuffs could be the best option.
Thanks also for details of various interesting websites.
