761636 2009-04-01 20:18:00 Hi guys,

Over the last few days I've been noticing some strange and peculiar behaviour on my HP DV5 laptop. The cursor seems to jump around between text fields when entering text which can get damn annoying! This occurs on internet browsers and websites (I've tried both Firefox and Safari, both show same symptoms) and dialogue boxes in Windows (i.e renaming folders etc.)

What essentially happens is while you are typing the cursor will jump up a line or into another field causing your text to become jumbled and confused. I've never seen anything like it. Whilst I've been typing this thread it has happened 3 times. First jumping into the title box and then into the previous paragraph as I was in mid-sentence.

Whilst it may not be necessarily harmful, it has the potential to become extremely irritating to say the least. I reformatted the PC before I noticed this so could it potentially be a driver issue? I hope it's not something more worrying such as a trojan virus etc.

Anyone have any ideas for fixes or what might be the root cause?

Cheers,

Paul

761637 2009-04-01 20:31:00 Could your touchpad be too sensitive and your palm is moving the cursor?
try adjusting the sensitivity.

761638 2009-04-01 20:56:00 If I understand correctly, a usb keyboard can be used with a laptop. This would eliminate the possibility of the problem being the laptops' own hardware.
The "tab" key is the one that changes the fields, so it may be anything to do with that particular key??
Good luck... hoping this is of some help.

If you wiped it and its a clean install and it does it still then no, unlikely to be malware.

761640 2009-04-02 02:27:00 Hi,
On the HP you can turn off the laptop touchpad (which I do) and use a USB mouse.
This behaviour wasn't showing up before I reformatted it, that's why I wondered if it was an outdated driver or such thing that had rolled back in the course of the reformatting process.

When I get home I'll have a go with a USB keyboard maybe, see if that eliminates anything.

Cheers,

Paul

761641 2009-04-02 18:00:00 Yeah, it sounds to me like a driver issue for either the mouse / touchpad, or you may be getting part of your hand brushing the touchpad as you type.

I've had a weird issue for years, which I call a 'mouse-kick'. The mouse cursor randomly whips off to an edge or a corner of the screen.

Curiously enough, playing id software games seems to be a precursor for starting this behaviour. Not nice when in a game of Quake your character suddenly looks straight up at the roof and does a fast spin. Totally disorienting.

I've never found a cure, but it definitely happens less if I play fewer id games!

761642 2009-04-02 18:55:00 On my HP I have found the same thing. However, when I turn the touchpad off and use a USB mouse, problem goes away. Touchpad must be too sensitive

Doubtful its driver issue, but you should still go to the HP site and get the latest drivers for your model

761643 2009-04-09 07:08:00 Had a case some time ago where a person complained that their mouse would sometimes move on its own. It was a 'wireless' mouse & the kid in the next room (other side of the wall) also had a 'wireless' mouse. The two mice happened to be on the same wavelength & close enough for the computer to read them. mzee (3324)
761644 2009-04-09 09:05:00 Hi,
On the HP you can turn off the laptop touchpad (which I do) and use a USB mouse.
So if you've got a mouse plugged in (is it an optical type?), do you have it sitting on one of those 3D patterned mouse mats (cgi.ebay.co.uk D_Film_TV_Film_Memorabilia_LE?hash=item18033847227 7&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1687|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A13 18#ebayphotohosting), they can make the cursor dance around the screen randomly (even without your hand on it! (vibes from typing etc)), had personal experience of this.
