| 582946 | 2007-08-21 08:31:00 | In my opinion using Google text ads or similar would avoid the whole problem, and earn you guys more revenue.I am not sure how much control you have over google ads, but you would have to be very careful none of the dodgy or falsely advertised pc "fixes" display links. Any reputable PC website would not want to have people following those links thinking they are being recommended or approved ... For example, I was looking at this Mozillazine (www.mozillazine.org) article the other day, and noticed a google ad for an application that reputed to "fix all those Thunderbird.exe errors". This certainly didn't look like the sort of advertising Mozilla would want ... Anyhow, being the nosey sort I clicked the link and ended up here (www.fixexeerrors.com). The whole website stunk of being a scam application. Then I noticed the URL construction, and with a small change, that same application now fixes belly button fluff (www.fixexeerrors.com). |

| 582947 | 2007-08-21 09:06:00 | Good stuff, this is all feedback guys and it's good to get. Now, personally I hate ads as much as the next guy, however, given the fact we're a commercial site, I don't think for one moment that they're over done on PF1, it's not like we're one of those horrible web forums that think it's a good idea to insert Google ads between posts or even inside posts. Even this dreaded Peel-Me thingy doesn't seem overly dominating to me. HOWEVER, if it's causing technical difficulties then let us know. Use the webmaster email link found at the bottom of every page (presuming you haven't blocked it :) ) and tell us your OS and browser and then if something needs fixing, it can be. Either that or the sale drones will tell me to go to hell... ;) One or the other. Carry on. It is causing techical difficulties for me, as my page only loads the top half of the page, then stalls while it is trying to download an ad file from ads.hosting dirct.com , then several seconds later it then completes the page loading. My isp says that it isn't a problem with them. I am not sure if it is the peal ad that is causing the stalling, but it only started happening since it appeared. I don't really want to setup a css file to block all ads, as I don't mind ads if they don't affect the viewing experience. I wouldn't even mind google ads, if it doesn't slow things down. |

| 582950 | 2007-08-22 08:49:00 | The good: Dear XXXXX We apologise for the problems you have experienced caused by the page peel advertisement . As you have reported, we are now aware that there are some technical issues with certain browser versions on particular operating systems and we are now working with the suppliers to get that resolved asap . We always appreciate your feedback though, of course, we're never happy to discover we've inadvertently created any inconvenience! We should have that fixed soon . Thanks and regards, LawrieThe bad: Peel me has returned again, and it's still a big annoying blob blocking a large portion of the page . Metla, you got those sunglasses handy? | 582951 | 2007-08-24 04:59:00 | I have now lost any faith I had left that FairfaxBM cares in the slightest about anything other than wringing every last cent from its users, even if that means driving some of them away. After emailing the FairfaxBM webmaster address to complain about the technical problems with the peel-me ad (as suggested by Scott Bartley) I received a 'helpful' email informing me that FairfaxBM was pleased to recieve any feedback about isues with its sites, and would resolve the problem as quickly as possible. Here are a couple of extracts: ...we are now aware that there are some technical issues with certain browser versions on particular operating systems and we are now working with the suppliers to get that resolved asap... ...we're never happy to discover we've inadvertently created any inconvenience! We should have that fixed soon.Immediately following this email, the peel-me was changed to circumvent the CSS I was using to block it - and unless this ad is blocked, it covers a large portion of the forum, thus rendering the site unusable. As you can imagine, I was rather annoyed and updated my CSS again, posting it on the forum so that other users who suffer from the same issue could benefit from the workaround. This afternoon, I logged on to PressF1 again to discover that another minor code change had been made - the javascript function 'peelDown()' had been renamed to 'peel()'; the only possible purpose of renaming this would be to circumvent the CSS I had posted. Fair enough, if the problem had actually been fixed. However it seems that nothing has changed, and the peel-me ad still renders the site all but unusable on Linux! If the problem had actually been fixed, I would have no issue with this - when it works properly, peel-me is one of the more bearable forms of advertising on this site. However forcing it onto users who have no choice other than "block peel-me or leave" strikes me as somewhat harsh. The following code is my solution to the problem. It now blocks all <object> items on the page; hopefully this proves a little harder to circumvent. And to FairfaxBM: I think your users deserve a little more respect; they provide you with revenue, so don't be so quick to decide that we don't matter. /*remove ads and misc branding clutter */ .fairfax_nav, #jcornerSmall, #jcornerBig, #advert-banner, #header, #navigation, #page-peel-right-6, .tfoot, table[width="160"], td[width="170"], td[width="300"], div[align="center"] a[target="_new"], div[onmouseover="peel()"], img[alt="PC World Forums"], embed[name="jcornerSmallObject"], embed[umode="transparent"], div embed, object {display: none;} /* hide the clock & post times */ td.thead {visibility: hidden;} td.thead a, td.thead[align="right"] {visibility: visible; background-image: none;} span.time, div.smallfont[align="center"] {display: none;} table.tborder {background: url("pressf1.co.nz) 0 0 repeat-x;} |

Does pressf1 actually make money? I thought it was here to help users & increase goodwill & demand for the mag, and the advertising was to offset costs. |
