582936 2007-08-21 01:14:00 This is a FREE Forum. You pay nothing. Somebody has to pay for it. Hence advertisers. Get over it. There are worse things in life. PJ :(

I don't mind the adverts that don't affect the quality of the usuability of the site, such as banner and side advertsing bars. However I find advertisng that hovers over the top of content, including those advertising that load in the middle of the screen and you have to click them to get rid of them, very bad form. The TV3 website has now started doing over the top advertising, so I now don't use it.

582937 2007-08-21 01:22:00 Don't get your point. As per post above, people are having trouble with this peal advert with some browsers and resolutions.

The point is, the powers that be are hardly going to allow a post to be stickied that tells people how to remove the advertising now are they.

What caused me to snap was the switch to incredibly slooooooooow ad servers, which render the site pretty unusable. Also the peel-me is incompatible with the Linux version of flash and / or opera, causing a huge blob to cover a large portion of the page.

As I have suggested many times before.... What is wrong with text ads?!?!?! They are less obtrusive and more likely to be clicked on. They are also targeted based on the page content. Because of this, they are less likely to be blocked. More clicks = more revenue.

582939 2007-08-21 03:00:00 The peel-me just makes me see red..I subscribe to the US version of PC World, and although most of the ads on this site are 'way out of my area....I chose in the past to just iggy them...

But this Peel-Me thing has got to stop.

It's nasty, loud, obnoxious and in my opinion any advertiser who allowed their product to be presented in such a way would be totally boycotted by me just for the lack of style and quality.

I don't have much trouble with bandwidth and slow speeds..but I DO notice that posting here now takes a lot longer than it used to.

Therefor..it is blanked and in an act of solidarity, I also blocked every other advertiser on this site...so if they also lose revenue, they should know it's because of the blaring peel-me device that cost them their 15 seconds besause of another advertiser's eyegore.

582940 2007-08-21 03:28:00 Good stuff, this is all feedback guys and it's good to get.

Now, personally I hate ads as much as the next guy, however, given the fact we're a commercial site, I don't think for one moment that they're over done on PF1, it's not like we're one of those horrible web forums that think it's a good idea to insert Google ads between posts or even inside posts. Even this dreaded Peel-Me thingy doesn't seem overly dominating to me. HOWEVER, if it's causing technical difficulties then let us know. Use the webmaster email link found at the bottom of every page (presuming you haven't blocked it :) ) and tell us your OS and browser and then if something needs fixing, it can be. Either that or the sale drones will tell me to go to hell... ;) One or the other.

Carry on.

Carry on.As requested, I have sent the following:

To Whom It May Concern,

The current array of advertisements displayed on PressF1 causes severe technical problems for myself and many other users; so severe that I have had to resort to blocking them. Details follow:

OS: Linux (Debian Lenny, 32bit)
Browser: Opera 9.22 Linux Native 32bit

Problem 1: The 'peel-me' ad doesn't work properly, and simply displays a huge blob obscuring much of the page. See this screenshot for a visual of the problem: www.imagef1.net.nz

Problem 2: The servers hosting the advertising are incredibly slow - this renders the site almost unusable until these servers are blocked.

I have no problem with viewing advertising on the site, but when it causes this level of interference I have no choice but to block it. In my opinion using Google text ads or similar would avoid the whole problem, and earn you guys more revenue. If you must display ads of the type there at the moment, please consider fixing the problems with them.

Kind Regards,
XXXXX XXXXX ('Bletch')

582942 2007-08-21 04:45:00 So there's a webmaster email link at the bottom of every page..?
Fancy that.
Never noticed it before.
Hmmm...

(Meditates on possible ways to rally the troops at a later date re The Clxxx.

How many emails sent at the same instant would be considered too many, do you think?

(No, we haven't gone away - just a reminder...)

582943 2007-08-21 05:37:00 Hmm, the ads give PC World money and they PC World pays Bletch to block the ads for the users... yeah... that works :pI actually meant in regards to fixing the clock... not the ad-blocking :p Myth (110)
582944 2007-08-21 06:21:00 I actually meant in regards to fixing the clock... not the ad-blocking :p Oh... I see... sigh... ruin my fun... :p :D The_End_Of_Reality (334)
