582740 2007-08-19 20:41:00 I believe the classic reply to that woman would be to "take your computer back to the shop you bought it from and tell them your too stupid to own one" Of course that got the original Dell tech fired, but hey, its true. Our bill gets direct debit to our credit card.

Of course it wasn't true or Dell. www.snopes.com

582741 2007-08-19 20:52:00 Too many smart arse tech's around here. Bet you are all just out of school.

It may interest you to know that when radio became available the same type of question was regularly asked.

Oh c'mon, dont even know who you pay for internet usage? That right there is a no brainer. I doubt there are many here just out of school...

582742 2007-08-19 20:55:00 I I mean would a plumber tell a customer how to fix a problem over the phone.

Um, actually my husband does sometimes.

Companies only do pc phone support because its cheaper than driving to customers place and fixing it.

Yep, it sure is. I charge nothing for phone support.

582743 2007-08-20 09:33:00 My Dad taught me lots about computers 18 years ago. He knew what all DOS files on the XT were for and could explain it over the phone. Then Windows came along and he started ringing me.

As he got older he started having problems with things he used to know and it became more complex. He is now very ill, hasn't touched a computer in over a year and never will again.

Trying to teach my mother how to email has been a long and interesting experience... As she is very deaf and has problems with phones it was necessary.

There is no way I would EVER work for a help desk even though I have taught a beginner computer class at nightschool.

I hate to say it (as a female who has always paid my own bills), but I suspect there might still be a few older non-working women out there whose husbands pay all the household accounts.
Certainly those existed in my mother's generation.

And if they never see a phone bill, they've no reason to know who charges for the computer.
Strange, but possible.

(Or maybe I should be envious..?)

I believe Geeks on Wheels does very nicely .

If computers is your business, you should feel comfortable charging good rates for any help you provide .

Geeks on Wheels . . . the black Suzuki Swift brigade .

You don't ALWAYS charge . It could be a quick 5 minute call after a $100 call out .

I am on a help desk, it is great, though I don't talk to the public (internal help desk)... But still the people I do talk to are always friendly etc. :D The_End_Of_Reality (334)

Very true Laura. My Dad died 10 years ago and the bill paying department threw my Mum into a real frenzy. She had never had a bank account or cheque book in her life, every account had been in Dad's name. She had a bit of a fast learning curve to cope with. It is not uncommon at all.

We both have the is irrational rule . If we don't fix something, we don't charge .

Phone support is not charging .
Examples:
Guy rang to say he couldn't view video via WMP . I got him to check in his firewall and allow it access . End of problem . He offered payment, I declined .

Friend rang to say work PC had a problem, it turned out it had lost its profile (Win2K), I told her how to fix that over the phone while she did it .

And the original lady - well 3 guesses who her ISP is and why she had a problem in the first place .
