761999 2009-04-05 05:05:00 Thanks for the suggestion but I unplugged the PC and removed the CMOS battery for over four hours yesterday to reset the BIOS with no success. :(

The Vista machine turned out to have an unrelated and different problem so it's back to the XP box.

No malware has been found, I've uninstalled several Windows updates and the most recent programs installed, all with no effect.

Either it's a hardware (motherboard?) problem or a Windows problem. Currently waiting for advice from the owner on to where to go next.

762000 2009-04-05 05:13:00 Why not chuck in a Linux Live CD and see if USB work then, should rule out either hardware or Windows. stormdragon (6013)
762001 2009-04-05 05:22:00 I did that too and couldn't find the USB ports but I'm not sure whether it was because of my lousy memory of navigating Linux or whether they weren't there.

I loaded a Mepis CD and the hard drive's two partitions showed up on the Desktop and in the "File Manager" but not the USB ports. Are they supposed to automatically show up when a memory stick is plugged in?

762003 2009-04-05 06:57:00 Had another go with Mepis and two of the USB drives are showing up and the others aren't. Looks like it is a Windows problem for those two drives anyway. FoxyMX (5)
762004 2009-04-19 03:26:00 Just an update on this. It turned out that it was hardware failure but a new 6 Port PCI USB add-on card was successfully installed.

I am concerned, however that whatever caused the original USB ports and card reader to die is still causing problems as Windows is still very slow, despite a full format/reinstall.

Does anyone know what might be the culprit? There are no odd noises or other flaky behaviour, everything is just slower than it used to be. I have never known hardware to slow Windows and programs down. It is definitely not a software problem.
