761974 2009-04-03 10:52:00 There is only one video card. What resolution should I be looking for? How do I 'check video card'? Cheers.

As Wainuitech mentioned.
Try with another computer and plug the Monitor or Screen into that.

If the screen now works then its probably the card or drivers on your PC.

If the screen does not work on the other machine then there is a possibility you need a new screen or monitor.

761975 2009-04-03 18:04:00 Most monitors these days are between 1280x768/1024 and 1920x1080

May be a hardware issue with the graphics card, set it to the lowest possible resolution and try. If you can, get hold of anotehr monitor

Blam

It is set to 1024 x 768, currently. It can go higher. If it is set to a lower setting as above, what will that do?

To reinstall the drivers, do I just throw the CD into the drive and follow the prompts to reinstall?

I will try all the other suggestions, progressively, just won't be till this eveing. I'll let you all know. Cheers.

761976 2009-04-04 01:00:00 The CD is probably outdated and contains old drivers, download the latest drivers from the manufacturers site Blam (54)
761977 2009-04-11 04:48:00 Hi, All. It looks like the monitor is the problem. I've borrowed a AOC 2216Vw LCD widescreen Monitor, which is running at a resolution of 1680 x 1050, and the problem has been eliminated. De Sade, wainuitech and Sweep, you were right! Thanks. Conversely, I put my old monitor on another computer and the problem stayed with the monitor.
Is it worth having the monitor fixed or am I up for a new monitor?
What to get?
Just to reiterate, my existing and apparently faulty monitor is a AOC LM726 LCD (17"). The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce FX5200. The rest of the system is AMD Athlon 3200+, XP SP3 1.0Gb RAM, desktop.
In order to get the widescreen monitor working properly I had to restrict it to the VGA (analog) cable as with the DVI cable (or both), the computer wouldn't 'plug n play' the test monitor. However, now that I've done that it works fine and I can't see any great issues, thus far. I'm not a gamer.
What do I want? I want a larger screen, not necessarily a widescreen (perhaps, 18-22"), but widescreens seem to be the new standard. I'd like speakers incorporated as we don't listen to much, nor play DVDs on the computer; We've got a home theatre for both those tasks. Separate speakers take up too much desk space. Warranties look to be relatively standard at 3 years. I don't want to upgrade the graphics card.
What are the pros and cons of widescreen vs standard aspect?
What resolution is best?
Do they all come with both VGA and DVI sockets / cables?
Do you miss out on something without the DVI cable connected?
What brand and model do you suggest with the above in mind?
Is there a particular range that would suit?
Where should I get it from? (I'm in Wellington.)
Generally speaking, is higher resolution better?
We're on a budget, but don't want to buy too cheap, as that will (no doubt) be false economy. Neither do I want over the top $.
Thanks.

761978 2009-04-11 06:06:00 For a good price and size, I suggest the VX2233vm.

Full HD 22" screen.

Comes with DVI cable

Definetly get widescreen.

Get it from CL:

Is 350 too much?

761979 2009-04-11 10:12:00 Thanks, blam6. I'll check that one out. Can the performance of a monitor be limted by the graphics card? (Note that the AOC 2216vw, temporarily connected (for testing purposes), is performing well.) Are ViewSonics good across the range? Cheers. A Team (13613)
761980 2009-04-11 10:26:00 Sorry, I'd almost forgotten you'd be running it on the FX 5200.

This would probably be a more suitable option:
www.qmb.co.nz

Ifyou upgrade the graphics card to something like the 8400GS(I have a new one you can have for 70, retail's around 85) you'll be able to output to full hd easy.

But not if you game

761981 2009-04-11 10:36:00 Thanks. The existing graphics card is working fine with the AOC 2216vw that I've got connected at the mo. Is that an indication that the VX2233wm would work OK with the existing card? A Team (13613)
761982 2009-04-11 10:53:00 Most probably-but you would probably have to run it at a lower resoltuion should you decide to game.
