761112 2009-03-31 21:53:00 Hi,
Can someone please help with this error message: "Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges . "

I backed up all my files onto Maxtor OneTouch4 Plus, formatted my harddrive and reloaded everything . When I came to restore all the files I noticed a group of folders that I must have done something to make them secured by loading privileges or along those lines .

When I reloaded everything after reformatting I alos upgraded from Office Professional 2003 to Office Professional 2007 . When I tried to open one of those protected (or whatever the term is, all I know is the files in this folder look green) files the error message came up:
"Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges . "

I can retore all the other documents from Document & Setting except these protected folders .

I'm working from my Dell Inspiron 6000, Pentium M Processor 2GHz, 1GB RAM . I'm running Windows XP Home Edition .

Thanks for your help in advance .

761113 2009-03-31 21:59:00 Have a read of This MS article (support.microsoft.com) - it tells you how to take owner ship of the files.

Also read This reply (answers.yahoo.com) - basically the same thing but in plain english.

What happened is when you reinstalled the PC as far as the documents are concerned you are not the original owner.

761114 2009-03-31 22:01:00 You possibly need to take ownership of the files.

761116 2009-04-01 01:36:00 I followed the instructions on how to take onwership of a file or folder in Windows XP, rebooted my laptop in safe mode, but when I tried to look for the folders and files that were protected I couldn't see them because they were still on the OneTouch4Plus external hard drive. Obviously the the safe mode doesn't read th external drive. It seems like these protected files will be stuck in the extrenal drive for good now. Where to from here? kfoffice (9242)
761117 2009-04-01 01:46:00 You could try Open Office which is a free download from http://openoffice-software.com kjaada (253)

Cant you copy them to the PC, save some place like the desktop and then access / change the permissions from there. ?

It "should" read the external drive in safe mode - its only a USB plug in device.

761120 2009-04-01 05:09:00 I've loaded openoffice and try to open one of the protected files from the external drive but an error message came up: access denied .

I also copied one of the protected files from the external drive and tried to paste it somewhere in My Document but an error message says: cannot copy file, access denied .

I'm sure why the safe mode is not picking up the external drive (yes via USB) but that's the case . In fact I'm in the safe mode right now . I've had a look under Device Manager and Disk Management and neither shows the external drive . . . . . mmmm . If I take my external drive and plug it to another computer will it solve the problem?

761121 2009-04-01 08:24:00 Since nothing is working we'll try another approach. You have to boot in Safe mode to access the "Security Tab" in properties. Since the EHD cannot be seen in Safe Mode(weird??), then try this

1. Download Security Configuration Manager Tool from here (ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/tools/scm/SCESP4I.EXE)
2. Double click the SCESP4I.EXE and extract the contents to a folder on your hard disk.
3. Go to the folder where the SCESP4I.exe contents are extracted, locate the Setup.inf (Setup Information) file.
4. Right click on Setup.inf and select Install.
5. Reboot computer after installation finished.

Now, you can boot into normal mode, and still have the security tab. Follow Wanuitech's link to the instructions, without booting into safe mode.

Good luck:thumbs:
