762596 2009-04-05 23:58:00 hi there im a newbee

advice its needed please

I have windows xp home edition (stand alone not domain joined)
i have IE8, SP3
I have just downloaded zone alarm free 8.0.298.000
its great btw
and ive just realised something important about the alerts i was receiving for iexplorer.exe
server program internet explorer wants to accept connections from the internet
which i must admit in the old version of zone alarm i have allowed
however today i did a search in the forums it said that it could be a trojan and to deny it
so i denied this alert and selected remember this setting
fully expecting to lose my connection or internet access then to get errors like page cannot be displayed etc
but i havent infact my pc is working better and my dial up internet connection has not disconnected itself (so far) touch wood...lol...
but heres my question if this is infact a trojan and if
FFEXTINSTALLPATH.EXE and GENERATECONFIG.EXE and LSA Shell (export edition)
could also be malicious then why did
spybot 1.6.2 free or avast 4.8 home free or adaware anniversary edition free
pick any thing up?
i have also done a trojan remover scan, malwarebytes scan, cc cleaner scan, hijack this scan, glary utilities scan
all the results of these scans were posted at pressf1.pcworld.co.nz
the nice guy helping me out noticed that in one of my log results it said that it could not verify what version of internet explorer i was using
i told him it was definetly IE7 (at the time it was) ive recently updated it from microsoft to IE8

So does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks so much in advance

762597 2009-04-06 00:43:00 I highly doubt you have a virus.

You have nothing to be scared about.

People are too paranoid about this stuff, just keep Avast! up to date and scan with MBAM/Spyware Terminator once a month.

And ZA is overkill, Windows FW+route hardware firewall is sufficient.

if you really need one get Comodo

762598 2009-04-06 00:49:00 ive got another question to ask
java is giving me problems
what is java js2 runtime enviroment?
what is java Java Quick Starter?
java(tm)
do i need it?
can i uninstall it safely without breaking anything?
i think it came preinstalled with the pc???
iammcb (14488)
762599 2009-04-06 01:16:00 okay so ive disabled all the java ad ons
and all the adobe ad ons
only because i think i dont need them
no one has convinced me otherwise
and im considering now uninstalling java and adobe
iammcb (14488)
762600 2009-04-06 01:19:00 You need Java for many online web applications.
Adobe is required for flash video(i.e for youtube etc)

DO NOT remove either of them

You can remove Javaquickstarter from startup using msconfig or HijackThis

762601 2009-04-06 01:20:00 the reason behind this is because event viewer tells me there is problems with these 2 programs (my quess is they probably need updateing). but hey if they can be so easily exploited why the hell are they so nessary in the first place. after all when you get the information bar telling you not to download and install active x then why should i ignore it? iammcb (14488)
762602 2009-04-06 01:34:00 cool thanks for that blam6 i appreciate that
just enabled flash (cant have the youtube videos not play)...lol...
ive just checked the version in manage add ons
and this seems current to me doesnt need updating by the looks of things
but heres all the info in add/remove/programs

do i need all of these???
acobat.com version 1.1.377
and adobe air 1.0.4990
adobe reader 9 version 9.0.0

then i see i also have macromedia flash player 8.0.22.0
macromedia shockwave player 10.1.1.016

adobe flash player 10 active x

762604 2009-04-06 02:25:00 just want to look at my signature so ignore this post please iammcb (14488)
762605 2009-04-06 04:05:00 Keep them all, they are required for online web apps.

You could uninstall Adobe Reader and install foxit reader, which is much less bloated...
