| 585206 | 2008-07-16 23:37:00 | I'm from ireland and I'm a fairly big man but when I was burgled in my home in a certain city in England, I had to watch kids take my belongings because I know the law and I know that in England the law would crucify me, had i touched them! I feel disappointed and let down (The government may aswell have Come in and taken my laptop themselve). When I was young and I did something wrong, I got thumped! (And that was for much less than Burglaring a house) Anybody who sides with the burglar, probably does deserve to have their house burgled so they learn how intrusive it feels! By putting the legislation on the side of the burglars, you have really stolen the liberties o the person who's space has been invaded. But there are many, many social issues around here. Where I'm from bouncers protect the people in bars, but here they do the beating, which I find very sad! They think they are big men but to me a big man is some body who looks after people, puts other people ahead of themselves and works hard. But these animals don't tick any of these boxes! Yours truly, Disappointed Dan! |

In a real world we should have a secret police which just take care of small details by shooting people and disposing of their bodies at sea. tedheath We have found your first subject ted. Apart from that I am sure you sympathise with Dan as I do. |

You have to deal with them somehow because you don't just live in a sick society - you are a functioning part of it. When you enjoy the benefits of living in a collective you have to shoulder the burden of dealing with the less desirable outcomes. And that beautifully sums up everything that has gone wrong in Western societies in the last 40-50 years (NZ is not alone in having serious crime issues) We insist on treating all people as equal and having equal rights regardless of their behaviour towards others. If you cannot live by the rules of a civilised society you should not receive all the benefits and privileges that accrue to those that do manage to live by those rules I have absolutely no problem with living as part of a collective, and helping out the less fortunate. That is part of living in a civilised society. Some of my taxes go to State Housing, sickness benefits, DPB, etc and I am happy with that - as long as the recipients don't go round assaulting raping and thieving off the rest of us. If they do, they should expect to be isolated from the community, for life in some cases Regards Peter J |

So people do abrogate their rights when they chose to ignore or deliberately breach the rules (laws) which glue our society together . It was considered by the government about ten years ago to remove ACC coverage from anyone hurt while committing a crime . I suspect it was too hard to define so quietly disappeared . Well said, that's the point I was making about rights and the accompanying obligations . If you cannot respect the rights of other law abiding citizens then you should lose some of your own rights accordingly . The assumption that all are equal regardless of their treatment of others has underpinned much of our legal system for years . This must change, which implies major and far reaching reform, and not before time . I suspect you are right about the ACC matter . A review/ redesign was promised after a prisoner claimed ACC for injuries incurred in the course of an escape, but I cannot recall whether they actually followed through with it, as you say I suspect they didn't . Regards Peter J |
