762197 2009-04-07 09:43:00 Before you make a decision on the OS - why not at least give yourself some more options. Ubuntu is not the only Linux version - and although it seems to be synonymous with 'Linux' at the moment (clever marketing), there are alternatives that are IMO better.

If you want to try something with eye-candy, give Suse or Mandriva KDE4 versions a go. For something more solid with KDE 3.5.10, try Mepis or PCLOS. Or if you prefer to stick with Gnome - Mint is another good choice. All of the above you can download a live-cd and try (test-drive) before you plunge in.

And if you do go with Linux - join the forum of the distro you eventually settle on. They'll help immensely. It's a bit of a learning curve but worth it.

762198 2009-04-07 10:15:00 The reason many forum members here recommend Ubuntu is because it is very good for the beginner, there are many distros yes, but every single one has its strengths, ubuntu just happens to be very easy to use and requires almost no terminal intervention... Blam (54)

Tried many of the others Blam? Reason I ask is that I have. I wouldn't have made above recommendations if I didn't think all 5 of those alternatives were viable - especially for newcomers to Linux.

762201 2009-04-08 05:03:00 Yeah ok, Il go and see what Ubuntu is like, I dont mind if its a learning curve becuase im a patient person (as you noticed from my earlier post about Windows ME)

The reason im getting Ubuntu is because its the only one i can get shipped from shipit.ubuntu.com.

I still dont see whats wrong with ME, its only a blue screen that makes you lose what internet page your on or some document that is backed up... And it only happens about 3 times a month
