I understand from your points so far that these two cases should be treated equally when it comes to ACC payments? With no questions or raised eyebrows? If my understanding is not correct, and I hope it isn't, then so be it. If it is, and you beleive it is both morally and ethically correct for the two cases to be judged equally, then I guess you and I ain't headed for a lot of agreement on such matters. Yes, I am serious. I am giving you the opportunity to state your case clearly and completely before I address any points you are making or trying to make. You will notice that I am giving you the benefit of the doubt as to whether your points are clearly thought through at all. I believe that Winston001 answered your points well, however. I would add, though, that the Inland Revenue Department is quite happy to receive tax payments on earnings from criminal activity. Does that mean that the government is profiting from illegal activity? |

They are entitled to enjoy the protection of the law just like any other person in this jurisdiction. I think thats what bugs people, crims ruining lives then getting busted then getting a relatively non existant punishment, even to the point of getting paid. |

What should bug them more is their inability to draw the fine distinctions that are necessary to the complex - yet consistent - moral view that these same people are expecting others to live by. |

Lovely prose but I wouldn't have a clue what you are really trying to say. |

| 585194 | 2007-08-31 20:28:00 | And now we have this:- . stuff . co . nz/4185736a6000 . html" target="_blank">www . stuff . co . nz Full text below as Stuff links disappear at times . ------------------------------------------------------------ Saturday, 1 September 2007 I was defending our village A charter fisherman accused of dishing out village justice to teenagers has no regrets about protecting his Wairarapa community . After a crime spree in the fishing settlement of Ngawi, three young burglars - two aged 19 and one 15 - were found by police cowering on a hillside . The youths claimed residents had thrown rocks at them . After a depositions hearing in Masterton District Court yesterday, villager Garth Edward Gadsby, 59, was committed for trial on a firearms charge . He pleaded not guilty to recklessly discharging a firearm at Ngawi on September 18 last year . The court was told he was in a car with other villagers which chased and rammed the young burglars' stolen car as they fled . Shots were fired at the car, with pellets lodging in the bumper and bodywork . In affidavits to the court, Gadsby defended his actions to police, saying he was an experienced marksman and had tried to shoot out the car's tyres . Outside court, he said he was disappointed police had charged him . "I was protecting the residents and the holiday home owners of our community . We have a lot of elderly people in the village and these scumbags have come in and trashed houses . "It is one and a half hours to the nearest police station . We weren't trying to hurt them, just send them a message and stop them . " The 10 witness statements to the court tell of a night of mayhem at the village, beginning on September 17 and coming to a head at dawn the next day . Two of the youths, Joshua Diamond and Owen Guthrie, who last year confessed to their parts in the crime spree, are serving prison terms . The third, a boy of 15, was dealt with in the Youth Court . Diamond said in a statement that he and one of his cohorts had been chased after being discovered trying to break into a Ngawi bach . The pair, who were in a car they had stolen in Wellington, were allegedly rammed at least four times and shot at about five times . "I slid down in my seat so that I was sitting low and I did this as I was trying not to be shot . " They shook off their chasers but later were forced to jump out the window of a bach when they were discovered again . "I am so sorry for breaking into those houses and for stealing and damaging property . I understand why the people of Ngawi are angry with me . "I would have accepted it if someone had given me a hiding that night as I think that we deserved that . However, I cannot accept that there was any need to shoot at us . " When police arrived at the village they were greeted by a blockade set up to stop the burglars from escaping . Police found the trio hiding on a hillside, where they had cowered from a barrage of rocks being thrown by villagers standing on the hilltop . Gadsby has been remanded on bail with conditions that he surrender his guns and firearms licence to police . He is to appear in Wellington District Court on October 16 for a trial date to be set . ------------------------------------------------------------ |

OK...assuming you are, one is a criminal." allblack seems unable to draw the fine distinction between the existence of a person - and the rights and entitlements this existence confers - and the actions of that person. allblack seems to imply that there is some qualitative difference between members of the human race. Supposedly this difference arises through an individual's actions and that rights are therefore not universal - but this is not stated clearly. allblack is also unable to draw the fine distinction between the concepts of "legal entitlements" and "profit". I think somebody who is so unclear about what they think and believe should be a bit more worried about their own conduct than that of others. |
