762214 2009-04-04 02:04:00 Dont think there is an option, well I've never seen one.

Only way to see if it works, is plug it in and see if it does anything

762216 2009-04-04 02:05:00 Thanks everyone for all your help.

Just one last question: where on the IDE cable can I put the DVD drive (I do actually need it), as the mobo only has one IDE port. The HDD is on the end/2nd port - was that my problem? Shouldn't it have been on the 1st port as it was before? Will the DVD drive work on the 1st port - does the Slave come before the Master?

762217 2009-04-04 02:09:00 Oh, and apparently I need to reactivate Windows because of significantly changed hardware. Does it work the same way as last time: it gives me a code, which I type into the phone, which then gives me a code which I type into the box on the Validation window? darthcarnate (14113)
762218 2009-04-04 02:11:00 Oh dear. It wants the disc to update all the hardware. I need to put that DVD burner drive on.

So should I restart, than put it on the 1st port, and leave the HDD on the last port?

762219 2009-04-04 02:25:00 Thanks everyone for all your help - my PC is running perfectly now. My first build (well, sort of: I upgraded nearly every component) works! Turns out it was an IDE Master/Slave issue - and I scoffed at the thought that anyone could be confused by that.

Now, to reward myself for some hard work, I'm going in for an hour or two of Empire Total War - one of the reasons for the upgrade!

Thanks again,
darthcarnate

762220 2009-04-04 05:37:00 No wonder you had problems :groan:
Oh, and apparently I need to reactivate Windows because of significantly changed hardware You are lucky it booted at all - you cant simply go changing motherboards from an already existing PC and expect it to work right away - the original install would have been looking for drivers related to the old board/setup .

Sometimes if the original board and new board are close enough then it will boot.

I wonder if there are any yellow marks in device manager.
