762720 2009-04-06 09:17:00 I have recently build a new machine . The mobo is an Asus and has 4 Sata connectors .

I have 2 hdd's and dvd drive connected via Sata connectors .

I get this occasional problem where if the computer is running it will completely freeze . I can not do anything (ctrl, alt & del does nothing) and the even the cursor is completely frozen . The hdd lcd lights up and does not flicker at all . I have to do a hard reset . When the pc reboots it hangs on the Asus boot screen . If I press Del or Tab it then hangs on the post screen and displays "auto-detecting sata1" .

I usually have to disconnect and reconnect the Sata cable . Once I have done this the PC works again fine . . . . . Until the next time it hapens (Maybe once a week) . There is no real pattern of when it happens .

Could it be a faulty SATA cable? Faulty Sata connector on the mobo? I ran a seagate program to scan the hdd for errors and that did not find anything .

Does anyone know of a way to isolate the cause of the problem or have any ideas on what could be causing the problem?

Thanks as always for any help . . .

762721 2009-04-06 09:20:00 What OS are you using ??

Depending on if its Vista or XP there are ways to see whats causing the problem.

762725 2009-04-06 10:25:00 See if the following gives any hints - Click start/run, type in eventvwr <press Enter>

Look through the system logs at the time of the freezes, there may be an error message, double click it to open, copy/paste back the complete error message. Also assuming there are error messages, what are their names.

You may also wish to have a look under the application logs as well.

762726 2009-04-06 13:25:00 Having had a look at the manual, the SATA sockets are numbered (from the top)

Do you have your boot drive on SATA1?
Or do you have the two drives set up (correctly?) in a RAID configuration? (the instructions for this are on your Mobo cd, so I cant help you there).
Have a feeling the different coloured sockets have a bearing on that :).
Also, from the manual:

• By default, RAID function of these connectors is set to [Disabled]. If
you intend to create a Serial ATA RAID set using these connectors, enable
the nVidia RAID Function item in the IDE Configuration sub-menu in
the BIOS. See section “2.3.4 IDE Configuration” for details.

Hi Feersumendjinn.
Yeah I noticed the order of the sockets when I was putting together the machine. I have the boot (hdd) drive on Sata1, the second hdd on Sata2 and the DVD drive on Sata3.

If the mobo Sata1 socket was faulty could I boot off the Sata2 socket and leave the Sata1 socket empty?

Thanks for your help/suggestions guys. It is appreciated.
