762337 2009-04-04 18:49:00 I am building myself a new machine:eek:
and wish to save the contents of the old machine onto my synology server, from where I can access it for my new machine, as and when required.

As anyone got a recommendation as to the best method of doing this?

762338 2009-04-04 19:44:00 Im not familiar with Synology servers, but being linux-based I would assume they will support ssh, and therefore scp

If this is the case, I would 'man scp' in the linux console and then do something like this:

scp -r /folder ip-of-destination:/destination/folder/

I think thats correct syntax, been a while since I have done it

You will need to know your root or user passwords on the remote machine (in this case the Synology server)

Just noted: Synology servers have a GUI so therefore should have their own tools for importing data from the clients. I see they also have extensive support and help documents on thier site :)
Look to be very user friendly

I guess I was looking for something I probably don't have to worry about.

The browser interface works quite well (on the synology server) and I can treat the various directories as if they're just on the PC I work with i.e. from "my computer".

I also figured out how to use ssh from PuTTY, then use the command line; had to for one or two things that can't be done from a GUI.
I actually appreciate it because it keeps my hand in with linux, now that the Synology 108j has made my Debian box redundant.
Another thing, I can also connect with Filezilla.
