584203 2007-08-24 09:09:00 Can I use my old 35mm Nikon lenses on a new D40x?? Rte66Charlie (12717)

There is most probably an issue with autofocus on most old lenses if they were bought for film bodies.

584205 2007-08-24 11:32:00 What are your old lenses like?
If you have manual focus lenses - yes but manual focus and manual metering. It won't tell you what exposure settings to use.

If you have AF lenses but they are non AFS, then you get no AF and you do get exposure settings.

If you have AFS lenses, it will AF and expose.

D40 and D40x lacks the motor drive around the lens mount hence it won't focus unless you have the AFS lenses which has a builtin motor in the lens. D50 and D70 and higher can use AF lenses to AF.

584207 2007-08-24 22:55:00 The Nikon Mount has remained unchanged for years,so all Nikkor Lenses will fit. but only the auto focus lens can be used relatively seamlessly, the manual lens while still usable, present problems with focusing and exposure.
I have used Nikon for over 40 years, and they are amongst the best. Choice of system at that end of the market is personal preference, rather than superior technical excellence factors.

584208 2007-08-24 23:18:00 Nikon Lens Mounts have remained the same over the years. Depending on exactly how old your lens are and whether they are all manual focus or AF, they should still work ok on the newer Nikons, if they are fully manual from the F3 era as a example, you will of course lose the AF and metering both of which will have to be done manually. The Nikon AF lens will be compatible to various degree's depending on the model and which Nikon series it was designed for.

I am a user of the D2X and while most of what I use is fully compatible, I also have access to some older lens from my F3M which work just as well bearing in mind that I have to manually do some of the tasks such as focusing etc.
