763579 2009-04-09 07:39:00 I had a trojan a few days ago and though Avast removed it, Win XP is failing badly. Recycle bin not working, search and help functions dont open or work, installing a printer not working, external USB drives not working and so on.

Can I reinstall XP but have it leave may data intact ? I also cannot do a backup either, though last weeks backup should be still Ok on and external USB drive. I really don't want to loose a few days work.

I have not done a reinstall before, but is it easy to find the point where I need to do something to stop a full install and instead install just the operating system ?

763580 2009-04-09 07:45:00 Reinstalling over windows wont fix things.

If its playing up. Doing a clean install will WIPE everything. So, copy documents to something.. Then format, then reinstall the drivers etc, and whatever programs you installed

Did you disable system restore??

763581 2009-04-09 07:49:00 You should try and remove the malware first.

There are probably still traces of it in the PC.

My Opinion is : "If its fixable-fix it. Otherwise, reinstall.

Disable System restore. Right Click My Computer>Properties>System restore tab>Tick "Disable system restore on all drives"

Download MalwareBytes from here (files1.majorgeeks.com) and update then scan. After that, download trojan remover, update and scan.

Once that is done, download HijackThis (files4.majorgeeks.com) and copy and paste the log here.

Save HijackThis to your desktop and run it.
Once that is done re-enable system restore, and we will help you with the rest of your problems.

763582 2009-04-09 08:33:00 Sounds a bit like some bugs have gotten in real deep - What speedy suggested could be the best - sometimes if infections get to deep you can never fully remove them, or the damage they do . Reinstalling is the best long term answer - seen it many times, where you think its all fixed then within a week you are right back where you started .

IF you want to do a repair install - its not that hard:
Heres How

You will need your 25 digit product key for this .

Place XP CD in drive: Reboot or shutdown and start PC .
1 . When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD .

2 . Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen .

3 . Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console .

4 . In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement .

5 . Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP .
NOTE: if it doesn't locate your old OS STOP! As any further actions may result in wiping your data .

6 . Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup .

Yeah, sys restore is turned off .

Backup is a problem as the computer will not recognise another internal HDD, nor any external USB drive, flash drives or the cd/dvdrom . So somehow I need to copy my data and my printer is lost off the computer and it won't let me reinstall it . Gee, starting to look like I am going to loose stuff!!

763585 2009-04-10 06:25:00 Yeah, sys restore is turned off.

Make sure you turn it back on once the PC is working correctly again.

763586 2009-04-11 09:03:00 You could use an online backup service. jackM (14814)
763587 2009-04-13 10:19:00 [QUOTE=curly;771803]I had a trojan a few days ago and though Avast removed it, Win XP is failing badly. Recycle bin not working, search and help functions dont open or work, installing a printer not working, external USB drives not working and so on.

Well of course I have been offline for several days trying to sort out my problem. It turns out that I had a "flaky" BIOS, which was churning out random information. Got a replacement mobo and all is well again. Thankfully I had a Norton Ghost backup and have now recovered most of my data.

But most of all, I wanted to thank those who offered help to solve the problem - thanks much.
